Katz has worked in the aquatics field for over 30 years and is the author of five other books on fitness, including Swimming for Total Fitness (LJ 4/1/93). Here, she explains the benefits of fitness during pregnancy and the special qualities that make water exercise one of the best ways to attain a good level of fitness while pregnant. Each exercise is well illustrated and clearly described. Some examples are supplemented with extra tips and variations. About the Author
Dr. Jane Katz, EdD, has been a pioneer in water exercise and physical fitness, working in the aquatics field for more than 30 years. She has been a member of the U.S. Masters All-American swimming, long distance, and synchronized Swimming Teams since 1974 and continues to set world records. As a professor of health, physical education, and athletics at the City University of New York, Dr. Katz has taught swimming, water exercise, and fitness to thousands of people and lectured at clinics worldwide. For more than 15 years she has studied and seen first-hand how water fitness benefits pregnant women.

Dr. Katz received her doctorate from Columbia University, where she specialized in leisure studies and gerontology. Since then she has made numerous television appearances and written hundreds of magazine articles on aquatic fitness and water exercise. She is the author of five previous books, including Swimming for Total Fitness, The W.E.T. Workout, Swim 30 Laps in 30 Days, Swimming Through Your Pregnancy, and FitnessWorks!

Dr. Katz is a trustee member of the National Council on Women's Health and has been a consultant to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. She was appointed by the International Swimming Hall of Fame to serve on its international congress board and is an advisory board member of the Aquatic Exercise Association, and the U.S. Water Fitness Association.

Still a great book.

I got this for a co-worker. I had used it years ago during my pregnancy. It's still as good as I remember it.

An excellent resource for mothers-to-be

This book is packed with useful information for women who are eager to remain active during their pregnancies. The clear instructions and easy-to-follow illustrations ensure that even beginners can enjoy a safe and healthy workout. The book also contains clear guidelines on modifying your workout as your pregnancy progresses. This is the best book of its type available, which is why I recommended it in my own book, The Unofficial Guide to Having A Baby.

Useless if you want to swim laps

I got this book from the library because I wanted more information/ tips about swimming during pregnancy. I'm glad I didn't buy it, because the tips for technique are crazy (like inhale and exhale using BOTH your mouth and your nose), and the sets go along the lines of "swim freestyle for 400 meters". I don't need a book to come up with that!
