The Oxford Classical Texts, or Scriptorum Classicorum Bibliotheca Oxoniensis, are renowned for their reliability and presentation. The series consists of a text without commentary but with a brief apparatus criticus at the front of each page. There are now over 100 volumes, representing the greater part of classical Greek and Latin literature. The aim of the series remains that of including the works of all the principal classical authors. Although this has been largely accomplished, new volumes are still being published to fill the remaining gaps, and old editions are being revised in the light of recent research or replaced.

I microscopic print of one of the best philosophical texts ever
By Carlos Spicyweiner
The work itself is inarguably the best version of Lucretius, and that would be an automatic 5 stars. Unfortunately, the size of the thing is so small, it borders on being a prank. It's 5x7" and the text appears 3-4pt font, which is barely larger than a pharmaceuticals insert you get with medicine. It really seems like Oxford University Press is telling us all, "we have the best of the best in Latin, and we're the only source, so we can totally give you the middle finger, and you'll still be back for more. So go buy a magnifying glass and shut up about it." The size of this book is an insult to the reader.

The book could be much shorter. The book would be much better without typos in the code examples.
By Jeremy K Hourigan
This is a somewhat useful reference on communications between the arduino and android devices. It should not, in my opinion, be viewed as stand-alone. There is a lot of space wasted in this book adding a handful of lines in a serial fashion to code that is duplicated over and over in the book. Honestly it could be a hundred pages shorter, with judicious use of color.

The most frustrating aspect of this book is that it is rife with typographical errors in the code sections that throw bunches of errors in Eclipse. Most of the errors are fixed, unbeknownst to the reader in later "listings".

The salvation of this book is that the "actually-debugged" code on Github works and in concert with the annotations in the book and the comments in the Github code instruct the non-novice reader on the ins-and-outs of Arduino-Android interfacing.

That said the code on Github is a nice achievement and makes the book worth owning...

This reads like a set of web pages. In the end I had better luck just going to the android web page. Don't waste your money.

Interesting Topic - Incredibly Poorly Executed
By PaulTR
This book recommends purchasing a kit from Arduino that was specifically tailored for use with the book. The kit itself uses Tinkerkit sensors that don't match the part numbers used by the book, and the kit does not include a sensor shield that is required to use the sensors, as a piece of plastic behind the pins prevents the sensors from being plugged directly into the breadboard. Did I mention the kit starts off at roughly $270 USD? You'd think they would at least verify the parts fit the examples in the book before commanding such a high price. The forums for the book haven't had any replies in about a year, the source code is typoed and buggy in the book (did they bother to pay an editor?)

Hopefully someone else will come along and write a book on this incredibly interesting and growing topic that isn't terrible.

One of the 3 Beach Reads You Won’t Be Able to Put Down – O Magazine

“DiSclafani’s story sparkles like the jumbo diamonds her characters wear to one-up each other. Historical fiction lovers will linger over every lush detail.”—People

From the nationally bestselling author of The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls comesa story of 1950s Texas socialites and the one irresistible, controversial woman at the bright, hot center of it all.

Joan Fortier is the epitome of Texas glamour and the center of the 1950s Houston social scene. Tall, blonde, beautiful, and strong, she dominates the room and the gossip columns. Every man who sees her seems to want her; every woman just wants to be her. But this is a highly ordered world of garden clubs and debutante balls. The money may flow as freely as the oil, but the freedom and power all belong to the men. What happens when a woman of indecorous appetites and desires like Joan wants more? What does it do to her best friend?

Devoted to Joan since childhood, Cece Buchanan is either her chaperone or her partner in crime, depending on whom you ask. But as Joan’s radical behavior escalates, Cece’s perspective shifts—forcing one provocative choice to appear the only one there is.

A thrilling glimpse into the sphere of the rich and beautiful at a memorable moment in history, The After Party unfurls a story of friendship as obsessive, euphoric, consuming, and complicated as any romance.

The Shamrock Hotel was wildcatter Glenn McCarthy's green baby. Sixty-three shades to be exact: green carpet, green chairs, green tablecloths, green curtains. Green uniforms. The hotel sat next to the Texas Medical Center, which Monroe Dunaway Ander son had founded and bequeathed nineteen million dollars to in his will. It was like that, in Houston: there was money everywhere, and some people did very good things with it, like Mr. Anderson, and some people built glamorous, foolish structures, like Mr. McCarthy. Mr. Anderson helped more people than Mr. McCarthy, certainly, but where did we have more fun?

The rest of the country was worried about the Russians, worried about the Commies in our midst, worried about the Koreans. But Houston's oil had washed its worries away. This was the place where a wealthy bachelor had bought himself a cheetah and let it live on his patio, swim in his pool; where a crazy widower flew in caviar and flavored vodka once a month for wild soirees where everyone had to speak in a Russian accent; where Silver Dollar Jim West had thrown silver coins from his chauffeur-driven limo, then pulled over to watch the crowds' mad scramble. The bathroom fixtures at the Petroleum Club were all plated in twenty-four-karat gold. There was a limited supply of gold in the world; it would not regenerate. And Houston had most of it, I was convinced.

We valeted our car and headed straight to the Shamrock's Cork Club; Louis, our Irish, gray-haired bartender, was there, and he handed me a daiquiri, Joan a gin martini, up, and Ray a gin and tonic.

"Thank you, doll," Joan said, and Ray slid a folded-up packet of money across the bar.

That night we were all in attendance: the aforementioned Darlene, dressed in a lavender dress with, I had to admit, a beautiful sweetheart neckline; Kenna, Darlene's best friend, who was very nice and very boring; and Graciela, who went by Ciela. Ciela had been a scandal when she was born, the product of her father's affair with a beautiful Mexican girl he'd met while working in the oil refineries down in Tampico. His ex-wife had been rewarded for his sin—she'd received the biggest divorce settlement in Texas history. All of this was old news, though. There had been bigger divorce settlements since then, much bigger. It was Texas: everything bigger, all the time.

Ciela's father had married the seorita, was still married to the seorita, which perhaps would have been the greater scandal, if he weren't already so powerful. We all had that in common, save me: powerful fathers. And husbands who would become powerful. And we were going to go there with them.

Darlene kissed Joan on both cheeks and then turned to me, "Long time no see, Cece," and then laughed uproariously at the repetition. She was already loaded. "You look like Leslie Lynnton herself," she said, and even though I looked nothing like Liz Taylor, aside from the dark hair, I was pleased. We'd all seen Giant at least three times, were titillated by the fact the James Dean character was based on Glenn McCarthy himself, even though we publicly hated Edna Ferber and her portrayal of Texas.

Ciela, whose hair was now so blond and coiffed she looked as Mexican as Marilyn Monroe, was on the arm of her husband, and Darlene and Kenna's husbands were across the room, smoking. My own husband was at my side; Ray was quiet, a little bit reserved, most comfortable near me. He wasn't shy, exactly, but he didn't feel the need to be the center of anything, a rarity in our crowd.

The night wasn't full of possibility for us wives, like it used to be, like it still must have been for Joan. Yet the champagne was crisp and cheerful, the men were handsome and strong, and the music buoyed our spirits. I was wearing a beautiful silver dress, strapless, cinched at the waist. (Ray made a good living at Shell but my mother had left her small fortune to me, and because of it I wore astonishing clothes. My one extravagance. My mother had always refused to touch the money, thought my father should earn more. And so it was mine, granted to me in a legacy of bitterness, in lieu of parental attention. I was determined to spend it all.) My wrist was encircled by my fourteenth-birthday present, a delicate diamond watch I only took out when I was feeling hopeful. Later tonight we might venture outside, to the Shamrock's pool, which happened to be the biggest outdoor pool in the world, built to accommodate waterskiing exhibitions. Joan loved to dive from their high board, said it felt like flying. Or maybe we'd make our way to the Emerald Room, the Shamrock's nightclub.

The Pathology of a Friendship
By Susan
This book, so appropriately titled, caught me off-balance at its first page and has not let me go. Set in 1950s Houston, The After Party is the story of two girls, now young women, whose lives intertwine to the point of a creepy obsession by one character.

Joan Fortier, a classic narcissist, seems to have emerged from the womb as a beautiful, flamboyant, thoughtless rule breaker with an endless supply of her daddy's money. The narrator, Joan's best friend, is also called Joan, but the girls' first schoolteacher, insistent that multiple Joans cannot coexist in her classroom, forces the more docile girl to use her middle name, Cecilia. She is forevermore called Cece.

What terrific character development by Anton DiSclafani! These two girls as they become young women make me want to pull out my last hair for different reasons. Cece eventually lives with the Fortiers after her mother succumbs to cancer, with assistance from Joan. Cece's father lives with his mistress in St. Louis, rendering Cece technically an orphan. Joan and Cece become partners in crime as youngsters, with Joan in charge.

Cece will do anything to please Joan, the It Girl. Because of her friendship with Joan, Cece's social currency is significant as well. Let there be no mistake; Cece is also beautiful and wealthy, but in her mind, she is a stratosphere beneath Joan.

Cece will also do anything to protect Joan, most of the time from herself. Like many narcissists, Joan is a compulsive liar, and Cece eventually finds herself lying to Joan's family and, even worse, to her own husband. "Grow a spine (or a part of the male anatomy)", I seethed.

Anton DiSclafani perfectly portrays the era in which the story takes place. I had to continually remind myself that the young women were barely twenty. Wealthy girls were expected to make good marriages, bear children, become perfect hostesses, dress to the nines, keep perfect homes and be model wives. Volunteer work, Garden Club, Junior League and lunch with gal pals at proscribed eateries only; no paying jobs allowed. From my experience, this was more commonplace in the South. A glance at my Mount Holyoke directory during this period bears out my theory. By no means were Southern women intellectually inferior to their Yankee counterparts; this was a cultural divide.

I laughed when the women chain-smoked and guzzled daiquiris during their pregnancies. I distinctly remember women having a few smokes with their OB/GYNs!

I loved reading the accurate stories of Houston. Stories of the famous Shamrock Hotel abounded as I grew up. Because I am a St. Patrick's Day baby, I begged my parents to take me there for my birthday, but, unlike Joan, I did not get my way.

I thoroughly enjoyed The After Party and recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good yarn. Well-written and provocative, the book held my attention for two straight days.

The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls was a favorite of mine
By Word Lover
The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls was a favorite of mine, so I was eager to read Anton Disclafani’s second novel. Yonahlosee was a slow-go, but this book has even more languorous tone that reinforces the pace of upper crust Houston in the 1950s, where life revolved around the country club, Junior League, home and family and friends, and women didn’t experience today’s multi-tasking. But it also started to drive me nuts. More than two-hundred pages into the book, not that much had happened, beyond getting to know Joan Fortier, a dissatisfied, beautiful and spoiled starfish who sucks up all the oxygen in her elite, circumscribed pond, and her best friend Cece Buchanan, the book’s narrator, who is agitated when she is not living in Joan’s shadow. The two have been lifelong friends, but Cece—whose neediness borders on a sick obsession--needs Joan more than Joan needs Cece. Cece, whose given name is Joan, had to give up her name for Joan in kindergarten, to avoid duplication in the class and this didn’t faze her—all her life she has happily sought the role of Joan’s disciple.

I found neither character to be deeply interesting or relatable. Cece seems to border on a sycophantic stalker and Joan struck me as lazy, although I am aware that I am looking at their lies through the lens of 2016 urgency. The author has developed the characters to the extent that she can, given that there isn’t much there there.

Cece has a possibly autistic toddler, and this aspect of the book is tender and warm. Much of DiSlafani’s writing is sharply observant, but I cannot recommend this book with complete enthusiasm.

Well-written social critique
By Alan A. Elsner
This well-written novel, set among Houston oil-rich socialites in the 1950s, revolves around the relationship of two women both named Joan whose lives are intertwined from the age of six. One is a rebel, flamboyant, a rule-breaker with a self-destructive edge. The other is a "good girl" who always strives to fit in and fulfill expectations. If the first Joan is the sun, the second is a minor planet revolving around her.

The narrator is the second Joan, known from early in the book as Cece. A teacher, seeing them both together, decided she could not have two Joans in the class and decided that the flamboyant Joan should keep her name and the shy Joan should be known by another one based on her middle name. It's a symbolic act that symbolizes that the first Joan will always have primacy.

Cece's life is not easy though she is rich. Her father leave her mother and eventually forms another family far away. When she's a teenager, her neglectful mother is stricken by cancer. Cece, the good daughter, cares for her through her final illness -and with Joan's help, eases her passing. Now an orphan, Cece moves in withJoan's family as an unofficial adopted daughter. Joan's parents accept but do not love her. But they see her as a good influence on their own wayward daughter.

Cece eventually marries a good, steady (boring) man and has a son -- while Joan disappears and then eventually reappears, drinks to excess and sleeps around. The African-American woman who was employed to help raise Cece explains: "Joan was a fireball because she had a mother who cared about her. You wanted to please because your mother didn't notice you."

There's something maddening about both of these characters. Cece, the narrator, is truly Joan's "handmaiden," as one of the other characters observes. She is so needy, so empty without her friend, so lacking in backbone. She even endangers her marriage to chase after her irresponsible friend. Toward the end of the book, she observes that without Joan's radiance, she would have been "just another girl" and the world would have been indifferent toward her. What was the great need within her, the yawning hole in her soul, that could only be satisfied by Joan?

And Joan, so thoughtless, shallow and self-destructive, is also hard to like. When her dreadful secret is eventually revealed, it comes as a false note, inconsistent with the character, and as something of an anti-climax.

Yet I believe this book has another more important message. It examines the lives of wealthy, unfulfilled women in the 1950s and finds them empty. None of these women work. They spend their lives lounging by pools, playing cards, gossiping and drinking vast quantities of alcohol while hired helpers raise their children. Cede observes that one did not get married and have children for fun or pleasure. "You married and had children so you could be an adult, so you could have something to worry about besides yourself. But not Joan."

It is this subtle indictment of the lives of subservient women before feminism that makes this book worthwhile despite the empty characters.

World as Laboratory: Experiments with Mice, Mazes, and Men, by Rebecca Lemov

Deeply researched, World as Laboratory tells a secret history that’s not really a secret. The fruits of human engineering are all around us: advertising, polls, focus groups, the ubiquitous habit of “spin” practiced by marketers and politicians. What Rebecca Lemov cleverly traces for the first time is how the absurd, the practical, and the dangerous experiments of the human engineers of the first half of the twentieth century left their laboratories to become our day-to-day reality.

From Publishers Weekly
Lemov, a historian and anthropologist, addresses nearly a century of study into "human engineering," the idea that behavior can be modified through manipulation of the surrounding environment. The social implications of such research are important, but equally worth pondering, she suggests, is what it tells us about "the impulse for scientific experimentation" and how far scientists will go to indulge it. Some of her most intriguing passages deal with individual researchers like fear specialist O. Hobart Mowrer and sociologist John Dollard and how their theories—their career paths, even—were shaped by their emotional conditions. But Lemov balances this personal approach with close consideration of the major institutions involved, tracking the effect of grants handed out by the Rockefeller Foundation and digging into the vast archives of Yale's anthropological database (all the more remarkable for being entirely on paper). She also reports on the government's interest in the field, including the CIA's encouragement of research designed both to combat and refine psychological torture. Lemov's final charge, that "many people continue to suffer from the use of these techniques" as deployed by consumer surveys and political polls, needs substantiation, but her historical argument is both eye-opening and persuasive. From Booklist
Lemov explores the behavioral sciences during the years 1900-60, after which much of the human experimentation previously conducted acquired an odious reputation; the author remarks she was predisposed to dislike the psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists who conducted it. Lemov improved her opinion of them, but her well-researched book nevertheless imparts a sense of uneasiness about human engineering. An outgrowth of stimulus-response experiments on animals, behavior modification of people became the goal of ambitious psychologists such as John Watson, coiner of the conditioned-response theory. Tellingly, he eventually went into advertising, while in his wake in the 1920s, foundations directed by behaviorist enthusiasts funded behavioral science centers at Yale and Harvard. With World War II, Lemov remarks, their denizens traded lab coats for uniforms, applying behavioral theories to occupied areas. A balanced account of the behaviorists' crusade, Lemov's history provides crucial backstory to contemporary practices in psychology and mass media. Gilbert Taylor

Review
“Delves into both the grotesque and the comical experiments that built the modern world…With a healthy sense of amusement and an appreciation for the absurd, Lemov recounts the attempts of the now largely defunct fields of behaviorism and behavioral engineering to quantify, predict and ultimately control human behavior…the book handles tough subjects in a deft and even charming manner.” —Seed Magazine

“Rebecca Lemov, a lecturer at the University of Washington, has produced a lively and well-researched history of the human engineering field and its broad intellectual and social legacy.” —Michael O’Donnell, The San Francisco Chronicle

“…an often enthralling history of the young science of human behavior and society.” —Scott LaFee, San Diego Union Tribune

Word as a laboratory
By Gregory Papadoyiannis
Very interesting book and very frightening also. In fact it seems like sci-fi but it's pure and simple reality. Things that hapeened and we must now about them. Otherwise we have to accept the consequences

Book more about history of modern behavoirism than experimentation on humans
By Yoda
This book is much more about the history of modern behaviorism from the late 1800s through the early 1970s than the psychological experimentation on human beings. This is a big dissapointment considering that it is marketed as the opposite. Approxmately 180 pages of the book's 245 pages are on the history of modern behaviorism with only the remainder on the human experimentation, a topic that the book covers in a very superficial manner. For those interested in a study of modern behaviorism this may be fine but for those looking for a study of human psychological experimentation not.

5 stars for the subject matter - but only 3 for the content
By D. Hodgson
Considering the incendiary nature of the topic (social control, brainwashing, forcible interrogations, chemical coercion) the euphemistic title of this book says much about how the content is treated. Mice, mazes and men - sounds harmless, no outrage there. Yet the history of how American behaviorists extrapolating from the techniques of B.F. Skinner (who oddly receives little mention) & Joseph Mengele (whose failed sleep-coma experiments were copied in the CIA's MK-ULTRA program) receives no mention at all.

Reading along through all the chapters, the actual "what can I take with me" information is very light, although the lengthy descriptions of many of the behaviorists' personal histories are more than sufficient. For all the talk about rat maze experiments and their importance, few are actually discussed in detail and fewer still are the facts actually learned from these.

In Part Three, "Files: Out Of The Laboratory" much is made of how -large- the files on human cultures collected at Yale were, and how -exhaustively- they were cataloged - but few examples are given of the data itself, who the data-gatherers were, and what protocols these data gatherers followed in their world travels, if anything.

And what practical techniques, exactly, did the modern beneficiaries of all this Cold-War experimenting (public relations, advertising, pollsters, marketing, government, the State Department) get out all of this? Entire books have been written on the techniques of persuasion used by each of these groups yet in "World As Laboratory" the reader walks away with very little in terms of concrete, practical modern-day examples.

The "thriller" part of the book, of course is Chapter 10's "The Impossible Experiment" documenting the CIA's brainwashing and drug experiments which rank among the most putrid of shames ever perpitrated upon American citizens by their own government. Yet, while related subjects such as Stanley Milgram's experiments are given great coverage, the equally important (and horrifying) Stanford Prison experiments are glossed over in just a couple paragraphs.

If you're wondering how Rebecca wraps this all up in her Conclusions, one need only refer to title of the book again - ultimately, the author is sympathetic, and even slightly admiring, of the scientific amoralists portrayed in the book. And although she tries to reassure the reader that attempts to create a Manchurian Candidate were unreliable and inconsistent at best, one can't help but feel that Rebecca is (mildly) rooting for the wrong team.

Crazy Jeff
By angieg
The book was O.K. but somewhat dissappointing. Most of the book was describing Dahmers victims and thier lives. I wish that the book would have talked about Jeffrey Dahmer a little more. The book was mainly about his victims and their families. I was interested in Jeffrey himself and how and why he murdered, had sex with, and ate his victims. There was only small sections in the book that quoted Dahmer.

Concise & Clear. Best C code explanation
By Turtleman
It is a small book, but it covers all the basics in very clear way.
It is NOT a book of random projects, but more close to a tutorial with example project.
Each chapter introduces different function of PIC.

The strength of the book is the explanation of C code.
It literally explains every single line of the C code.

This is one of the best book on PIC microcontroller programming.

Well written book for what there is of it. I might add that I'm very unimpressed with the fast one Amazon tried to pull on me when I ordered it. First off, this book is tiny, in every dimension. You have about a hundred and fifty useful pages printed on pages not much bigger than a novel. This is not a regular sized Newnes book. There is an abundance of white space in the book which gives it a nice uncluttered look but further deprives the reader from substance. When I logged on to amazon.com , their servers detected I was in Canada and offered/suggested a redirect to amazon.ca. I agreed. What they didn't tell me, or indicate anywhere, was that the prices were still in the much higher USD currency. Furthermore, they did not communicate that until AFTER the item was shipped, via a posted credit card charge, precluding me from cancelling the order. Fortunately, my credit card company intervened and got me a refund of the currency differences. Still a very disgusting experience. Book is nicely written though, from what I can see, but it's not worth it's nearly $50 final price. It's simply far too small.

From Third World to First: Singapore and the Asian Economic Boom, by Lee Kuan Yew

Few gave tiny Singapore much chance of survival when it was granted independence in 1965. How is it, then, that today the former British colonial trading post is a thriving Asian metropolis with not only the world's number one airline, best airport, and busiest port of trade, but also the world's fourth–highest per capita real income?

The story of that transformation is told here by Singapore's charismatic, controversial founding father, Lee Kuan Yew. Rising from a legacy of divisive colonialism, the devastation of the Second World War, and general poverty and disorder following the withdrawal of foreign forces, Singapore now is hailed as a city of the future. This miraculous history is dramatically recounted by the man who not only lived through it all but who fearlessly forged ahead and brought about most of these changes.

Delving deep into his own meticulous notes, as well as previously unpublished government papers and official records, Lee details the extraordinary efforts it took for an island city–state in Southeast Asia to survive at that time.

Lee explains how he and his cabinet colleagues finished off the communist threat to the fledgling state's security and began the arduous process of nation building: forging basic infrastructural roads through a land that still consisted primarily of swamps, creating an army from a hitherto racially and ideologically divided population, stamping out the last vestiges of colonial–era corruption, providing mass public housing, and establishing a national airline and airport.

In this illuminating account, Lee writes frankly about his trenchant approach to political opponents and his often unorthodox views on human rights, democracy, and inherited intelligence, aiming always "to be correct, not politically correct." Nothing in Singapore escaped his watchful eye: whether choosing shrubs for the greening of the country, restoring the romance of the historic Raffles Hotel, or openly, unabashedly persuading young men to marry women as well educated as themselves. Today's safe, tidy Singapore bears Lee's unmistakable stamp, for which he is unapologetic: "If this is a nanny state, I am proud to have fostered one."

Though Lee's domestic canvas in Singapore was small, his vigor and talent assured him a larger place in world affairs. With inimitable style, he brings history to life with cogent analyses of some of the greatest strategic issues of recent times and reveals how, over the years, he navigated the shifting tides of relations among America, China, and Taiwan, acting as confidant, sounding board, and messenger for them. He also includes candid, sometimes acerbic pen portraits of his political peers, including the indomitable Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, the poetry–spouting Jiang Zemin, and ideologues George Bush and Deng Xiaoping.

Lee also lifts the veil on his family life and writes tenderly of his wife and stalwart partner, Kwa Geok Choo, and of their pride in their three children –– particularly the eldest son, Hsien Loong, who is now Singapore's deputy prime minister.

For more than three decades, Lee Kuan Yew has been praised and vilified in equal measure, and he has established himself as a force impossible to ignore in Asian and international politics. From Third World to First offers readers a compelling glimpse into this visionary's heart, soul, and mind.

Amazon.com Review
In this memoir, the man most responsible for Singapore's astonishing transformation from colonial backwater to economic powerhouse describes how he did it over the last four decades. It's a dramatic story, and Lee Kuan Yew has much to brag about. To take a single example: Singapore had a per-capita GDP of just $400 when he became prime minister in 1959. When he left office in 1990, it was $12,200 and rising. (At the time of this book's writing, it was $22,000.) Much of this was accomplished through a unique mix of economic freedom and social control. Lee encouraged entrepreneurship, but also cracked down on liberties that most people in the West take for granted--chewing gum, for instance. It's banned in Singapore because of "the problems caused by spent chewing gum inserted into keyholes and mailboxes and on elevator buttons." If American politicians were to propose such a thing, they'd undoubtedly be run out of office. Lee, however, defends this and similar moves, such as strong antismoking laws and antispitting campaigns: "We would have been a grosser, ruder, cruder society had we not made these efforts to persuade people to change their ways.... It has made Singapore a more pleasant place to live in. If this is a 'nanny state,' I am proud to have fostered one."

Lee also describes one of his most controversial proposals: tax breaks and schooling incentives to encourage educated men and women to marry each other and have children. "Our best women were not reproducing themselves because men who were their educational equals did not want to marry them.... This lopsided marriage and procreation pattern could not be allowed to remain unmentioned and unchecked," writes Lee. Most of the book, however, is a chronicle of how Lee helped create so much material prosperity. Anticommunism is a strong theme throughout, and Lee comments broadly on international politics. He is cautiously friendly toward the United States, chastising it for a "dogmatic and evangelical" foreign policy that scolds other countries for human-rights violations, except when they interfere with American interests, "as in the oil-rich Arabian peninsula." Even so, he writes, "the United States is still the most benign of all the great powers.... [and] all noncommunist countries in East Asia prefer America to be the dominant weight in the power balance of the region." From Third World to First is not the most gripping book imaginable, but it is a vital document about a fascinating place in a time of profound transition. --John J. Miller

From Booklist
Yew is not an endearing figure. He is arrogant, self-righteous, and seems unduly sensitive to criticism by "outsiders" of Singapore's record on human rights. Despite occasional efforts to hide his less-than-pleasant characteristics, they often burst through in his long and often fascinating account of the dramatic transformation of this island nation into a stable and prosperous society. As prime minister for more than three decades, Yew certainly merits credit for Singapore's emergence, and there is much to be learned from his version of his stewardship. This is a detailed and sometimes difficult read, particularly if one lacks a strong grounding in macroeconomics. Still, his description of the difficulties of nation building in a multiethnic society has great value; his efforts to mesh Western concepts of free enterprise with Third World traditions of a "guided economy" may not have universal applicability, but they deserve close scrutiny. This is an essential contribution in efforts to understand why some societies seem so successful in becoming important players in the global economy. Jay Freeman

Review
"Lee Kuan Yew is one of the brightest, ablest men I have ever met. This book is a must read for people interested in a true Asian success story. From this book, we also learn a lot about the thinking of one of this century's truly visionary statesmen." -- George Bush "In office, I read and analysed every speech of [Lee's]. He had a way of penetrating the fog of propaganda and expressing with unique clarity the issues of our time sand the way to tackle them. He was never wrong." -- Margaret Thatcher "Lee Kuan Yew deserves recognition? Under his leadership, Singapore... equipped schools with one computer for every two students, and connected every home to a broadband network. On top of all that, he's a great storyteller." -- Scott McNealy, Chief Executive Officer of Sun Microsystems Inc. "There are two equalizers in life: the Internet and education. Lee Kuan Yew is a world leader who understands this and is using the power of the Internet to position Singapore for survival and success in the Internet economy...His engaging memoirs discuss his efforts to reshape Singapore, integrating information technology into the country's businesses, government and homes." -- John Chambers, President & CEO, Cisco Systems "Whenever I met Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, I was deeply impressed by his intellect, his vision and the depth of hisunderstanding on history and society. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, you will see in this book how a political leader of insight has led a tiny country to a prosperous modern society amid the tidal waves of world politics. And you will also find his ingenious views on Asia and the world to be a source of deep inspiration." -- Kim Dae-jung, President of the Republic of Korea "Lee Kuan Yew is one of the seminal figures of Asia, and this book does justice to his extraordinary accomplishments. Describing the motivations and concepts that have animated his conduct and explaining specific actions, he will undoubtedly raise many controversies. But whether one agrees or not, one will learn a great deal." -- Dr. Henry A. Kissinger "Mr. Lee Kuan Yew has gathered around himself the most brilliant minds, transforming the most exacting standards into a system of government. Under his leadership, the primacy of the general interest, the cult of education, work and saving, the capacity to foresee the needs of the city have enabled Singapore to take what I call ?shortcuts to progress." -- Jacques Chirac "This is a personal history of a man who, almost single-handedly, built a great nation from a small island? this is the first textbook in the world on how to build a nation." -- Kiichi Miyazawa "Lee Kuan Yew's vision, astutepolitical judgement and strategy turned Singapore from a trading post into the successful thriving nation that it is today, respected by others. For those interested in politics and economic development, his memoirs should be required reading." -- Tun Daim Zainuddin "Lee Kuan Yew is a statesman who created a successful nation. He has known everybody. He has achieved impossible things and his memoirs tell the truth." -- William Rees-Mogg "The title of this book, From Third World to First, expresses an aspiration of all developing countries but so far, alas, an achievement of very few. Singapore is one of those few. This account of its first years of independence written by its founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, will therefore be of great interest to people of other developing countries and to all those who are interested in their fate. It is also told with great clarity, in a refreshingly direct style. I found it a gripping read." -- Kofi A. Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations"More than 40 years ago, Lee Kuan Yew transformed what was a poor, decrepit colony into a shining, rich and modern metropolis -- all the time surrounded by hostile powers. With his brilliant, incisive intellect, he is one of the world's most outspoken and respected statesmen. This book is a ?must read' for any student of modern Asia." -- Rupert Murdoch, Chairman & Chief Executive, NewsCorporation "A man of vision and calibre, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew can be credited for laying much of the foundation behind Singapore's present day success story. As one of Asia's most prominent leaders, he has also done much to help promote closer economic ties between the countries of Southeast Asia as a whole. His latest memoir, well articulated and highly interesting, provides a thought provoking insight and a new interpretation of the region's history and politics." -- His Excellency Mr. Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister of Thailand "Lee's narrative is refreshingly free of the self-congratulatory tone of so many political memoirs...Useful reading for those with an informed interest in geopolitics." -- "Kirkus Reviews "Lee's role as a thinker, political philosopher, pragmatist and social observer emerges...strongly...this book (offers) ample, vivid and often startling accounts of Lee's numerous dealings with other world leaders. Good, if self-serving
By Foobar
Lee, Singapore's Prime Minister from the 50s to 1991, continues where he left off in his previous book of memoirs. After expulsion from Malaysia in 1965, Lee's government took the island nation from the Third World to its current First World status.
"From Third World to First" is organized by themes. In one chapter, he recounts four decades of progress in (say) building an armed forces. Then, at the beginning of the next, the timer is reset to the 1960s and a new narrative begins about attracting investors to Singapore. This format better allows Lee to explain his motivations in each area, but readers who are unfamiliar with Singapore's history will likely be disconcerted.
The impression one gets is of a government that meticulously addresses each problem area, working with a cool efficiency: a sharp contrast with the tumultous events of the first book.
While Lee is generous with praise, especially for his colleagues, the narrative is often self-serving. It's not exactly boasting - the man's achivements are very real - but it left a sour taste in my mouth. His trademark scathing criticisms, often directed at political enemies, are also less than graceful. His often ruthless treatment of the opposition is glossed over.
Still, the book is a good read, particularly for its gripping subject matter: the journey of a tiny, resource-poor island into affluence, set in the midst of the Cold War. Non-Singaporean readers will be particularly interested with the second half of the book, which is entirely devoted to Lee's personal dealings with assorted international leaders.
A minor annoyance: the editing is sloppy. Grammatical quirks are scattered throughout the text, which is surprising considering Lee's usually excellent grasp of the language.

Amazing!
By Ramsundar Lakshminarayanan
There are two parts to this book.
First part is about development of Singapore - social, economic and political. The second part deals with foreign relations.
As an Indian, I truly admire Singapore. From what it was in 1965 to what it is today, is an educating experience. Awesome to most third world nations - fighting poverty, population growth and other social maladies.
Lee Kwan Yew had a clear vision, set himself clear goals. Above all, what led to his success is his execution skills.
Rule of law certainly helped. What I adore is the team he surrounded with to create such laws and ensure its implementation regardless of obstacles.
Singapore is a wealthy society today. Secure economically and politically.
In my observation, he had 3 primary principles towards building a nation
a) Rule of Law
b) creating a fair society (not welfare society)
c) Expenses less than income (as simple as that)
All his domestic policies were based on above principles.
I like the way he treated hawkers in Singapore's streetwalks. While ensuring cleanliness of Singapore, he provided alternative solutions so that hawkers continued their business for livelihood in a better environment. Contrast this to Maharashtra government's (Indian state) efforts in cleaning and sprucing up Mumbai's Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus area. Vendors keep coming back.
Singaporeans enjoy high savings rate, because of CPF. A guaranteed security for its citizens when they retire. Contrast this to America's 401k. When Enron collapsed, savings of many employees evaporated even as executives pocketed millions in bonus pays!
Although Singapore is a free market economy, its philosophy concerning workers and employees are caring and genuine, unlike in the United States.
Singapore is an epitome of benign dictator ship, democracy, capitalism and socialism co-existing for the general welfare of the nation.
Lee's book is a revelation for all countries of the world. The three primary principles can act as a catalyst is resolving problems.

A must read for those interested in development
By MrSherlockHolmes
Singapore is one of the few nations in recent history, which has managed to transform itself from a struggling third world nation to a high tech society in less than fifty years. All this was possible - aside from many other factors - because of the genius of one man: Lee Kuan Yew. This book is the story of his quest to change Singapore.
The first part of the book deals with the various projects he initiated or oversaw that changed Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew gives an overview of what he did to deal with those problems facing every developing nation - crime, education, housing, investment etc...
Reading his memoirs, one cannot help but admire this man's moral character and sense of purpose, other leaders of developing nations would do well to learn from this man.
The second part of the book gives Mr Yew's views on nearly every country Singapore has had significant dealings with. His views are, as he himself says on many occasions, not meant to be politically correct. This means that those fluent in `diplomatese' may find his language crude and some of his views upsetting.
Not surprisingly the last part of the book, which deals with his family and his personal life is very brief. Given the formal tone throughout, it would not be in keeping to speak at length about his own personal life, although no doubt that would be interesting reading.
For those students of economics or politics and for those curious about Singapore or the Asia-Pacific region in general, I would highly recommend this book. The writing is extremely clear and the chapters are arranged in a logical order, (unlike the haphazard ranting in other memoirs) which makes reading a pleasure rather than a pain. Read this book to be inspired.
