A fitting end

I received this book as an ARC though NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked seeing how the threads of Nico and Zach's story wove together with Rhys and Darius's. I liked that their meeting wasn't necessarily positive, and that their goals weren't always in sync. I appreciated that the author didn't use this as an opportunity to vilify anyone, and that by getting in different character's heads I was able to understand what happened, and why from all perspectives. It added a lot of richness to the story for me, and I appreciated that.

The plot was nicely paced, and it really brought together a lot of the lose threads from the previous two books. It took both story lines, and really melded them together without making one more important or central than another. It showed how much all these characters were connected before they even met. The resolution was well done, and it left me feeling satisfied. There were no miracles, and everything that happens felt supported by the story, and the world building. Another great addition to this series.

Fantastic end to this series.

This is the third book in the STRAIN world and should absolutely be read after JUGGERNAUT and STRAIN. It picks up the story where both JUGGERNAUT and STRAIN left off, bringing their romantic pairs (Rhys and Darius from STRAIN and Zack and Nico from JUGGERNAUT) in direct contact to save what is left of the world.

This series of books is set approximately 100 years in the future after a military-developed supervirus decimated the population. People left on the planet? Estimates are in the ten thousands--the majority of them uninfected survivors living in small-to-large enclaves, the largest a settlement in Colorado Springs. The others are experimentally-treated soldiers, Jugs, who help comb the country to kill the lingering revenants--ravenous, Bane Gamma infected zombie-like persons.

Rhys is a survivor who is likely to be immune to all three strains of the Bane virus, and the scientists who remain in Colorado Springs want to test his blood and determine if a vaccine can be developed. Rhys' partner, Darius, is a Jug who will not leave Rhys to the whims of the scientists. The Jugs are outcasts, and rather bitter about it, due to their lethal blood. He and several other jugs travel from the Seattle area to keep Rhys safe.

They encounter Zack in Colorado, as he is a health worker for the scientists--this meeting is scarring for Rhys who was the subject of abuse from Zack's father and brother for nearly half his life. Over the course of testing, however, they build a rapport, and Zack confides in Rhys, Darius and the other Jugs about the disappearances in the compound, and how he knows that there are real scary things going down--likely due to the machinations of the sadistic Secretary Littlewood.

There are lots of political issues with the still developing society in Colorado, not least of which is a forced breeding program. Zack enlist Rhys's cooperation to help discover the secret lab of Littlewood, and the chase--quite literally--is on.

If you were hoping Zack and Nico would work things out, they do, but it's not pretty--for a long time. I just marveled at the deft plot twists and fantastic use of character in this book. I could honestly see and feel the scenes unfold. The love between Rhys and Darius is as harsh as their world, and it's erotic and delicious, too. Expect extreme monogamy. Yay! Also, expect the Jugs to save the freaking day, yet again. I hate to say it, but this book is frighteningly on-point with contemporary issues (think: corporations buying up the natural park lands) and with the supramilitaristic response when faced with the viral outbreak.

Rhys was a child when the outbreak occurred, and his adult insight--as he travels past burned out hospitals and tenements where the infected were locked down and incinerated alive--is poignant. Darius' constant love is engaging, Zack's commitment to his purpose (to remain Bane Alpha-free) is as noble as it is frustrating. Nico has known for years that he could sexually transmit safety to Zack, but Zack feels called to remain unprotected. His faith has a surprising reward and gave me the ability to breathe again--after holding my breath so long in fear that Zack would become infected and turn revenant.

The series is phenomenal, and I cannot love it more. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley.

Great Idea with Some Execution Missteps

I actually agreed to review this book but originally didn't realize that it was the third book in a series. As such, I decided to go back and read all three books before completing this review.

As a whole, I find the ideas within this series different and unique. The basic premise is that the US Government purposefully gave a group of military personnel a virus. When their blood is exposed to air, the blood turns into a very deadly virus. Obviously, the goal was to incapacitate the US enemies, but the virus is ultimately brought home to the US causing a global pandemic leading to a very unique post-apocalyptic state.

In this third installment, the narrative lines from the first two books finally converge as the characters hope for a cure and the desire to punish a sadistic government official.

The positive aspects of this book is that it does present a unique narrative voice for looking at a fiction genre that is all too common in young adult literature. The book itself moves a long at a pretty good pace and is definitely not boring.

My biggest critique of this book (and the series as a whole) is some of the over the top sex. The first book in the series is probably the most ridiculous when it comes to absurd amounts of gratuitous sex. Sadly, I think the over-sexualization of the book actually prevents it from being a book that could be widely read. At times, the sexual scenes are simply pornographic and their literary merit is highly questionable.

Furthermore, the sex portrayed in these books (although sex-positive) is at times violent. Just as the contemporary S&M/B&D communities find the sexual portrayals in 50 Shades of Grey violent, the sex in this series is often equally violent and not really representative of a real sub-culture. I get that this is a fantasy, but just because someone acquiesces to violent sex doesn't mean that it is nonetheless violent and abusive.

"Wide ranging with useful practical advice on difficult aspects of
immigrant medicine - especially the areas of communication and how to navigate cultural boundaries. The material covered goes from parasitic disorders through to psychiatric problems. The section on womens' reproductive health is very useful. This is an excellent book to have around to dip into for advice. I shall put my copy in our hospital library."

Travel Medicine encompasses a wide range of topics from the prevention of disease and health of international travellers to more exotics such as wilderness medicine, altitude medicine, aviation and space medicine. This is reflected in this timely, elegant, informative and comprehensive volume on immigrant medicine. No topic seems to have escaped the net. The text is well-illustrated, usually in colour, with clear and comprehensive charts and tables. This is a gem of a book, which is strongly recommended as essential reading for all physicians, laboratory and public health workers.

Does a good job with an impossible task

Most of this book is a practical review of a lot of conditions that those of us who went to medical school years ago had to learn, but mainly forgot if we were practicing exclusively in the first world. Things like schistosomiasis and neurocysticercosis. But, thanks to migrations of people and other circumstances, it may turn out that we have to relearn them. There are also good chapters on more common diseases, like tuberculosis and hepatitis B. There are chapters dealing with the distribution of various diseases, which can help you sort out what to look for in a particular patient, and chapters on special classes of immigrant patients, such as survivors of torture and interpersonal violence. The book takes an explicit moral stance: that many immigrants have gone through great hardship before reaching countries of refuge, and that they deserve compassionate treatment. For a textbook, it's decently written and edited, and presented in a nice format. Of course, to describe all the medical problems that could be encountered in, basically, the entire world except for the most developed nations, is impossible, but this book does a good job of reducing the task to something that's useable. I'd recommend it for anyone practicing in a setting where they see a significant number of patients who have arrived from less economically developed countries or regions of war.

This is a beautiful book, with sublime pictures of sculptures, who tells us the story of photography and the paper of sculpture in it.
It contains very good texts about the photographers and their work related to monuments, sculptures, fragments. It also mentions
the important role of sculpture to the photographers, because they could experiment new techniques, different angles, compositions
of several sculptural elements, such as still-lifes. Focus also the importance of photography to several sculptors, such as Rodin, Brancusi,
Rosso.

The book is a masterpiece of written essays and photographic illustrations showing the relationship of photography and sculpture. It should open the eyes of all photographers who want to photograph sculpture so that they don't need to be so literal, unless they choose to be.

The beginning of a very good writer....

I happen to be a "true-blue" Deveraux fan. This book probably in it's day was excellent. It reminds me of the "Judith Michael" books or perhaps "Janet Dailey" the sweeping novels of the 80's. She describes a fictional place in New Mexico to a "T". What I did not like about this book was.... as someone mentioned the way it ended. There were some loose ends that were tied up but done so in the last 4 pages which gave me a "let-down" feeling. The characters were engaging but some things that happened in the book just didn't make much sense so I'm glad I have it to add to my collection but I would really like to caution someone if you are just purchasing it to add to your collection hold off and wait to get it at a reasonable price. Because in my opinion the story is not worth the price that I have seen on auctions.

It is, but it isn't Grand Deveraux Style.

I can tell this is one of her earlier works, perhaps written before The Enchanted land, but published after it. And finally having gotten hold of a copy, I can see why it was allowed to go out of print.

I'm glad to own a copy, and will probably never relinquish it, because I wanted the complete Deveraux collection, and this one marked its completion. However, I have to admit a serious disappointment, especially since I prefer her earlier works to her later ones.

To forewarn all the romance fans--this is not a romance. It's a grand story of a woman who grows up and discovers herself, and a fantastic tale of the business she starts, but overall, it's rather drawn-out and the conclusion seems anti-climactic.

Anyone who wants the complete collection should buy this, definitely, and even read it through, but I doubt it'll be a favorite.

I WAS LUCKY TO FIND THIS BOOK IN MY LOCAL LIBRARY. I HAVE READ ALL OF JUDE DEVERAUX'S BOOKS (22) I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR IT FOREVER. IT IS NOT HER USUAL STYLE, BUT I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH IT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I HAD TO RATION IT OUT SO THAT I WOULD NOT RUSH THROUGH IT AND MISS SOMETHING. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

My father would always tell us that he was D.B. Cooper, so much so that when my little sister was in elementary school and the D.B case came up in one of her classes she didn't want talk about it with her classmates and had a huge amount of anxiety over my family's safety/future freedom. Haha! Here's to weird/borderline messed up parenting methods. I love my folks.....(mixed emotional tear).....hmmm. NOTE: My dad would have ben about 23 at the time and working his city job far away/taking care of his newborn (me) at the time. But thats kinda hard to put together when you are little, hehe.

The book is a great read and D.B. is a very generous and funny fellow. He apparently wants to give away some of the case and has left a chunk of the "future" book proceeds to one lucky winner that is going to pick up on the "7 clues" Mr. Cooper has left for us in the pages of the novel(?) I haven't finished the book yet personally but so far he has informed us that he invested a large chunk of the stolen money in Boeing Stock to "say thanks". Hehe, pretty awesome. I once took a criminal justice class as an elective from an ex- F.B.I officer who was actually assigned to the Cooper case and man-o-man was he still angry about not catching D.B. Cooper. The instructor swore up and down that Cooper was "dead'' and did NOT take kindly to questions regarding why the investigators never found a body. (did the FBI ever buy his book?!?!) So this case is STILL a touchy subject for some and very much lives i the minds of some Cascadia folks ,crime buffs, history majors and law enforcement till this day. Definitely one of the greatest NW legends to ever to exist! D.B, I hope you are living/ lived it up with that chunk of dough you didn't ditch on the bank of the river!!! Hehe. Recommended reading for any D.B Cooper nerd or fan of bizarre, novelty fiction. This book is quite rare I hear these days so if you can find a copy (especially under 20 bucks) BUY IT!!! Maybe that prize Mr. Cooper was offering is still available??!!? Full reimbursement for the book purchase and then some! Who knows, try it out!!!

There is a great deal of mystery about who actually wrote the thing

I actually picked up my copy of this book at the annual DB Cooper Celebration that goes on in Ariel, WA each November. Dona Eliott, the lady who owned the Arield General Store and Tavern and ran the shindig, had access to copies of the book. Unfortunately, she died in October 2015 and her family cancelled the 2015 celebration. It is unknown whether it will ever return.

About the book: There is a great deal of mystery about who actually wrote the thing, because it wasn't the REAL Cooper, of course. But it is well-written and very entertaining. The green title of the cover is embossed, not just printed on there, so whoever published it did a pretty good job for back in the day. Dona Elliot told me that she knew who the writer was, and I believe her. One reason is even after so many years after it was published, she kept coming up with more copies. (Ariel Store also had a section of DB Cooper colletibles, etc for sale) She sold them for six bucks each. If you can get your hands on a copy a little cheaper than Amazon's price, I would do it. Fun read, and being a writer/editor myself I can tell you two things about the author of the book: First, he knows how to write and spell, and the book was professionally edited. Second, this is NOT the first thing this writer has ever published. Other than it, he is still a mystery.

Writing falls between two chairs, or three, or four

Disclaimers first.

My review is based on my own learning style. Your mileage may vary, although the problems I describe seem likely to affect any reader to some extent.

I haven't looked at other Visio books yet. Amazon's reviews made this one appear to be the best, and it may well be... it just isn't that great.

Next, the good stuff. The book is extremely thorough, and I believe it's extremely accurate. I can tell that the author knows his subject inside out, and has spent a great deal of effort on this work.

Finally, the bad stuff.

I've been using Visio for over ten years, but I have never learned it systematically. I thought it was time I filled in the gaps in my knowledge.

Given my needs, I find the book very frustrating. It approaches Visio one feature at a time: the Ribbon, the template view, etc. For me, that's the wrong end of the telescope. I know everything I need to know about how the program's features work, as such. I want to learn how to DO things. For example, how can I draw a freeform connector and control its shape? If learning that involves learning something about the Ribbon or the template view, fine, but I'll never want to read a lesson about those features by themselves.

So the book isn't written for people like me, whose knowledge of Visio is deep but spotty.

I don't think it's written for beginners, either. No one is likely to retain much from a lesson that explains all the different things Visio's Ribbon can do before they've learned how to draw a circle.

Veteran users may find useful information here, but the book is written as a series of follow-along tutorials, and veterans will find the unfamiliar bits widely spaced and hard to locate. One wonders whether the author even thought about who he was writing for.

I'm going to skim through several more chapters, but at some point I'm probably going to set this book aside and look for one that discusses how to use Visio for meaningful work -- not just what Visio does.

Well organized, great tutorial

The Step by Step series of books has long been my "go-to" learning resource for MOS Exam prep, so it was natural for me to turn to a Step by Step book when wanting to learn Visio 2013. What I found is this particular book is, by far, one of the best organized and logically structured tutorial books that I've encountered. Kudos, Scott Helmers - great job!

I love Lana Harvey

I received the first book for free from a website similar to bookbub.com and I am so grateful to have found it. I have found I truly enjoyed reading this series. It has been a long time since I found a book series I am so into. I finished reading all 6 books in less than 3 weeks. Ms. Roquet has written about the afterlife in a very delightful, down to earth way. I am very much looking forward to her next book in this series and looking forward to checking out a few of her other books.

Cute series, keeps you hooked. Lunchtime read for me, a diversion from work, lots of fantastical situations and interesting characters. I am enjoying the books. 4 stars, repeating basic info in each book is overkill for the series reader.

This was like the other 3 books in the series. I was reading it and the next thing I knew I was getting the next one to read! Where does this author come up with the story lines? Angela, are you a retired reaper? These would make a great tv series. Like another "True Blood"

The collection includes such classics as Tillie Olsen's groundbreaking essay, "Silences," two classic essays by Joanna Russ, including the first feminist lit. crit. of science fiction, the first serious articles about the writing of May Sarton, Alix Kates Shulman, and Anna Katharine Green, the first woman to write detective fiction "starring" a female sleuth. It has been in print continuously since 1972. Recognized in feminist literary criticism histories as the "starting place" of feminist literary criticism, the editor's commitment to accessible language makes for a book that is delightfully readable.
