This manual focuses on a simple yet rewarding project that will allow the novice to cast a small piece safely, quickly, cheaply and to a high degree of quality. More advanced casting techniques are discussed in the second part of the book.

What does the manual cover?
The tutorial takes you through all the steps necessary to make a small, fist size bronze sculpture, from making the original sculpture in wax to finishing the final bronze reproduction.
The manual will introduce you to the basics of wax working, "sprueing" a wax model, mixing and applying a ceramic slurry, making your own crucible and making an efficient yet affordable furnace, melting and pouring the metal and finally chasing the bronze before applying a simple patina.
Advanced casting techniques such as hollow casting are discussed in later chapters of the manual.

What tools and materials are required?
Most of the tools and materials you will need are fairly easy to find, you may even have them already. However you will also need some more specialised materials that are more difficult to source:
To make it easy to find these tools and materials, an appendix lists a large number of places where such tools and materials can be purchased in different countries around the world. (UK, US, Canada, ZA, OZ, NZ, France, Ireland and more...) This will save you much time and effort and will allow you to quickly gather all necessary materials and equipment.

About the Author
A New Zealander since 1987, French born Olivier Duhamel lives on Waiheke Island near Auckland, New Zealand with his wife Marie-France and their 3 children. He is a sculptor specialising in the female human form and makes delicately crafted small bronze figurines. Olivier Duhamel' s creations do not convey any particular message, do not attempt any conceptual or symbolist exploration, nor do they search to be innovative at all cost. They are rather trying to simply capture the beauty and sensuality of his subject of study. His bronze works are sold in art galleries across New Zealand and also in Australia, China, Canada, France and Belgium.

For the occasional caster, art objects or small parts

I have to say that in addition to the content/subject of this book, the fact that it was a print on demand book from Amazon. Caused me to order it. This is the new direction that people are taking in getting their work out there with a minimum investment of money.

The quality of the book along with the color photo's is very good. Matter a fact it is better than I was expecting. Plus on the last page it is dated the day that it was printed. Which was interesting.

After watching his video on casting some small bronzes, on U tube, the conversion of and successful application of a minimal furnace kiln structure as they do in the pottery field.

And the fast easy home made low cost crucibles, along with some of the other aspects of his and his mentors techniques for the waxes models, the thin shell ceramic molds. The simplified, melting, casting, and other procedures.

Made it a must read book!

I can safely say that by following the information in this book, not only is it low cost, but puts the casting of parts for model engines, shop projects, art projects with in the reach of everybody young or old.

From the use of the weed burner torch as a heat source, the koawool (ceramic fiber blanket) furnace shell. To the heavy duty BBQ tongs, welding gloves, face shield.

It is one of the best books on the subject and will I'm sure to be come the foundation standard of small time casting in the future.

It covers every part of the process starting with the bronze casting itself. Tools, materials and equipment, moving on to a Project overview and then to Process overview.

Before starting gives some tips and into before you jump into the project. Then moving on to the wax sculpting, taking a lot of the mumbo jumbo out of it and giving tips, short cuts and the reasons for doing things this way.

He doesn't just tell you, he tells you his thinking behind doing it this way.
A big problem area in the wax model making is sprueing, He goes over the why's and wherefores of doing it correctly. And the reasons of doing either the top or bottom feed system.

Carrying on with making a Wax crucible, Constructing the wax shell, Dewaxing, Reinforcing the shell.

Constructing the furnace will change the way people think about small scale metal melting. With a furnace that can be rolled up and stored till the next time it is needed.

Baking the shell, melting the metal, and pouring the piece.
Chasing and fettling the finished piece and patination of the item, if art work.

Then he moves on to the more advanced multiple pieces at one time, larger pieces, Hollow castings, steel handles for larger shells. To advance feeding system designs.

Another great part of the book is his Appendices They are for the world in addition to being divide by subject/materials they are divide by country listing and the type of materials, along with websites.

It may be light on the tech stuff, but it is heavy on the practical of doing of a casting.

Great hands on, practical manual

I loved this book. Much the same style as his previose body casting manual, which I also have. Great explanations, step by step processes and great pictures showing each step. I have already made a small bronze cast on a very small budget. He tells you exactly what you need to buy, how much to buy depending on what you are making.

Looking forward to the next book in this series.

  What You Wished Your Favorite Prophet Would Teach You!

  I TRULY believe in the concepts of this book! Many talk about how when learning to prophesy just run up on some random unsuspecting soul and say the first cool thing that comes to mind. WRONG! There is some preparatory prophetic work to get you in the habit of recognizing and spreaking God's mind on a person or issue, and LUCKILY this book will show you how!

  Awesome Man of God that teaches without holding anything back. I am still so new to the Prophetic but I feel so much more confident after receiving these teachings from Apostle Les Crause. I thank God for releasing His Anointing through those that have answered their calling, while allowing me to receive His Anointing and answer my calling to The Prophetic.

From the preludes series, I have come to expect average books. They don't live up to the original chronicles series or the legends series, but they manage to stay in a quality worth reading. Flint the King is no exception.

Some of the problems:

Flint goes through the darken wood with no difficulty. Darken wood is supposed to be so dangerous few people have actually gone through it and lived(chronicles) but the book treats it like any other trip.

Flint becoming king/protector of the gully dwarves and getting along with them doesn't fit in the least with his stance toward bupu and the others in the chronicles.

Flint is too strong in this book. He manages to fight off a troll at one point, yet this is set before the chronicles in which he has difficulty fighting the low end draconians.

Despite all of this however, like the other preludes books, if you just read it on its own and ignore all the contradictions with earlier and IMO better books, you will find that you are reading an all together enjoyable book.

Excellent

This book really shows you a side of Flint that we don't get to see in the books with the companions. If focuses on his leadership abilities, his compassion for other races (especially the gully dwarves)and even shows him over coming his own prejudice towards his cousins (mountian dwarves). It also shows that Flint is capable of love. Very adventurous, funny and might even shed a tear for him. If your a fan of the companions then do yourself a favor and read about Flint. :) Youll see Flint in a whole new light.

Good and moving tale

Flint the King is one of the better dragonlance books in the genre. I was a little hesitant when i first picked up this book, thinking that it would be boring the whole way through. But i was severely wrong in that thinking. Not only was the book action packed, funny, emotional, but it had a great story line that keeps you hooked the whole way through.
When Flint goes to the lair of the mountain dwarves to investigate a murder, as well as discover what is happening to his town, he ends up getting captured. He is setenced to death, but ends up getting saved by some gully dwarves, along with a rather accentric mountain dwarf.
Flint must make the smelly, dirty, dumb gully dwarves into an army that can help him save his village from a terror that could wipe the town off of the map. Along with the female mountain dwarf, Flint tries desperately to save not only his life, but the life of all his family and friends.
This book is filled with just the right amount of action, suspense, and emotion, carrying you through the book until the last page flips by. Yes Flint is romantic in this book, but it does nothing to take away from the character that was established by Wies and Hickman back in the day. This book is definately up to the wonderful duo's standard, and will prove to be a great read.

DO NOT GET THE KINDLE VERSION

I've seen the author's Ted Talk and followed the crowd funding for this book. I really wanted to like it. However, the Kindle version of the book is designed for art, not for functionality (reading).

It is virtually impossible to read on a tablet because of the small print (and inability to increase the size), the colors used (example, dark orchid background for small black font), and the navigation. Tried to read it in the alternative on my computer. No dice.

I've purchased several hundred Kindle books in the past couple of years. This is the first one for which I've requested a refund.

If they fix the electronic version, I'll also remove this Kindle review upon request.

In short, avoid the Kindle version like the plague. The print edition should be fine (knock on wood). If I get the print edition, I'll update this review to address the content.

March 20, 2014 Update.

I purchased the print edition and have taken the time to go through it before writing this update.

The substance of the book is good. However, the design gets in the way of using it for its intended purpose - learning Chinese characters.

It's clear after seeing both the Kindle and print editions that the Kindle edition consists of imaged pages from the print edition rather than doing formatting for the Kindle. For that, the person in charge of layout for the Kindle should be sent to the woodshed with a dunce cap.

Unfortunately, the printed pages suffer from some of the same issues that afflict the Kindle. Specifically, the many pages with dark-colored backgrounds with small black font are difficult to read. In some cases, it requires taking the book to different lighting or using a magnifying glass to figure out what's written.

In other words, the purpose of learning Chinese characters is actually frustrated by the author's efforts as an artist.

In short, here's my rating unless and until the book is fixed.

0 Stars for the Kindle edition. It's horrible.
3 Stars for the Print edition if you want to actually learn the characters.
5 Stars for the Print edition if you want a colorful book to put on the coffee table to impress friends but have no intention of actually learning Chinese characters.

Great coffee table book, not so great for learning Chinese characters

I'm sad I missed the Kickstarter on this since I would have backed it because I love anything about learning Chinese language and it's a pretty nice idea. The book is colorful, bright and the Kickstarter backers should be proud that they helped something this pretty come to fruition. With its strong graphic design sensibilities and colorful content, it's a great book for anyone's coffee table.

Unfortunately for the learning side of things, it's not very good. I'm writing this review only because I think folks should know what exactly they're buying. While the pictures are clever, many times, the associations are a stretch and they just don't seem effective as memory devices. Also, the book switches between traditional and simplified characters seemingly to facilitate the illustrations, which can be confusing for students who would actually like to read one or the other. On top of that, some of the words that are illustrated are just not used any more (nuan2 - argue or xuan1 - shout, for example). Definitely helpful though if you're reading ancient Chinese poetry, which I'm sure, most folks are not. Of course, for that, it's not enough content.

I don't think this is a good resource for learning Chinese characters. Honestly, if the pictures thing works for you, I'd highly recommend Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters: A Revolutionary New Way to Learn and Remember the 800 Most Basic Chinese Characters since they actually put together more of a system with their images and a LOT of great explanations of how everything works. I do,however, think that Chineasy is a unique coffee table book. Unfortunately, I don't have a coffee table.

Not what I hoped for when I read the description

I thought this book would be different from the various other books that I have purchased over the years. I thought this book would introduce the reader to a few characters and them provide a short story using those characters as a way of helping the reader remember them. Not so. While the images are cute, the author just throws character after character at the reader with no opportunity to use them together and no opportunity to review them.

I am looking for a book or series of books that do a "Look Dick, see Spot run" approach. I would like to see a book that introduces ten or twenty characters and phrases, and then uses those characters to tell a simple story. Then I could read that story over and over again to help learn those characters. Then, of course, the book(s) would build on that by introducing more characters and more simple little stories.

This book sounded like it would do that, but it doesn't. By page 44, about 90 characters and short phrases have been introduced but no stories connecting them and no way to review them. At the end of the book, the story of Peter and the Wolf is told in English, not in Chinese. There are characters for the main players in the story, but no story. No way to put those characters together as a story. Thus, no real opportunity to learn how to read Chinese.

A prominent American nutritionist during the first half of the 20th century at Columbia University Teachers College in New York City, Rose authored several influential textbooks, the Laboratory Handbook for Dietetics, first published in 1912, and three editions of The Foundations of Nutrition, as well as books for the general public, such as Feeding the Family in 1916. Rose co-founded the American Institute of Nutrition and served as its fifth president in 1937-1938.

Fascinating

"Everyday Foods in War Time" is an interesting little tract written for World War I moms.

I found it particularly interesting not only because it tells us about what the then-current thinking was on scientific nutrition and 'vitamines', but also because of what it shows us about home life at that time: what the average family was likely to have for their meals.

The author is, for example, a huge fan of milk, which she advises everyone partake in. Milk being the 'perfect food'. But in lieu of milk being needed by the starving babies of Europe, she suggests vegetables and grains, even bananas.

Those of us who enjoy looking into the past will enjoy this book. There is a great deal of information of all sorts, as well as terms that are spelled differently, and which have different meanings. [The author uses "Spring Fever" for example to mean a sort of illness, and not as we currently do, to imply that someone feels the urge to kick up their heels.]

Excellent edition. I saw no formatting problems.

The author gives advice on how to feed your family well while dealing with rationing and war-time shortages. I am not a nutritionist so I don't know how well her advice holds up to scientific scrutiny but I will say she offers good advice on grains and reducing our dependence upon wheat as well as other advice on milk, meats, etc.

Worth every cent I paid and then some!

Another great insight into the WW1 food mentality and how to stretch foods to keep the boys over there fed while keeping energy and stamina up here. While some scientific nutritionists may scoff at this book, it was written to keep people alive and active and working during a time of shortages... and remember, it's recipies like these that people lived on. So before somoene says "Oh, that would never work"... it DID work.
