A Must Have for Every Spirit-Led Library

Kathryn Kuhlman, who always credited these wonderful miracles to the Holy Spirit, was not only an instrument of God's healing love, but she was also a wonderful teacher about God's way of life and His power. The book is filled with testimonies of many who were not only physically restored to health but who entered into a relationship with God for the first time by being spiritually reborn.

The healings came about in different ways: through a 6 year old child who prayed for her family to become whole and her parents to let go of the alcohol that ruined their family, through loving, believing family members who prayed for God to restore their loved one to health, and through Ms. Kuhlman herself being the Holy Spirit's agent of both leading the lost to God and physically restoring sick and damaged bodies.

I Believe in Miracles b/c of Kuhlman; I saw them.

Re: I believe in miracles. I attended Kathryn Kuhlman's services, and I am sure I witnessed miracles taking place. I talked to one of her workers who verified that she met people who had been healed in past services and their cases were genuine. And the ones I saw dancing around in front of 2000 people screaming "I am healed" and openly weeping with joy, surely looked "healed" to me.

I have never met another "faith healer" with the following or the number of claims of healings that Kuhlman had. I am always amazed at people who "check up" on the personal lives of such people and discount their whole ministry or life of "good deeds" and "dismiss" them with a wave because they did not lead an "impeccable life" themselves.

Because of the judgment of others, those who must meet a higher standard than the rest of us are "forced" to "lie" if they are to have a ministry outside of their private lives. People want "saints" of anyone who "works for" God.

God works through human beings. We are all human. Because Kuhlman acted as an "intercessor" or "point of belief" at a moment in time, God worked miracles through that woman. And He is still performing miracles today through the intercession of others, if the ones who are healed are open to the experience. But many prevent themselves from receiving a healing because of judgment of themselves or others.

A Testimony to Miracles of the Holy Spirit

Kathryn Kuhlman (1907 - 1976) was an evangelist who held "Miracle" meetings in which she preached the Gospel and people were healed of all sorts of medical condtions. Kuhlman hated the term "faith-healer", and always gave credit to the Holy Spirit for any miracles of healing that occurred in one of her healing crusades.

This book is a case study of about 30 healings. Each story is about 10 pages in length, and each is well documented. Details are given for each miracle healing, how the sickness began, the prognosis, the healing, and the aftermath. Most, if not all of these cases had their healings confirmed by their doctors.

If Miss Kuhlman was a fraud, as many of her critics claim, then this book (and two others that follow), stand in contrast to the critics. The stories stand on the evidence of the healing itself, and the supplementary documentation by medical doctors, family members, and friends. The cases presented are so detailed, they actually invite investigation; therefore, it is inconceivable that Kuhlman would present these stories of healing if there were not in fact true.

Cay S. Horstmann is a Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at San Jose State University. He is an experienced professional programmer and was Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Preview Systems, Inc. Too much and not enough

I came away from this book wondering just who was meant to read it. It starts with "A Crash Course in Java." (Somehow, I never learned to like any "crash" in the context of program design.) This is much too brief to teach the language, or even summarize it well. Any of many other books would be better for teaching Java to C++ programmers.
Next, the book goes through two chapters of object oriented design. These chapters are over in about 100 pages - again, not nearly enough time to address OO design in with any real insight. The OO paradigm is truly different from previous generations of software design, and can not be summed up in a few pages of rote rules.
Worse, the author identifies "javadoc" as a design documentation tool! It is not. Javadoc does a very good job of documenting implementation, but it documents design very badly. If you're not a programmer, trust me - implementation and design are as different as carpentry and architecture. Neither is better than the other, and both are needed to build a house. Implementation is not design, though, and the two require very different documentation.
The rest of of the book continues in an odd pastiche including:
-- ideas the programmer already needed to understand the earlier material,
-- afterthoughts on the Java language, scattered among other topics,
-- a weak discussion of design patterns, and
-- a severely flawed discussion of multithreading.
Only this last deserves attention. Multithreading is a subtle topic. It's easy to write multithreaded code, but very hard to write it correctly. The author actually does a good job of discussing interruption in threads. However, the book's description of synchronization and deadlock is so brief that it leaves me worried - student programmers might read that material and come away thinking they understood the topics. Insufficient knowledge may be worse than none at all, in this case. Most distressing, the author makes no apparent mention of "volatile" data in Java. Multithreaded applications don't need to use volatile data. The programmer MUST understand when volatility is a problem, though, and avoid it or address it directly. It is unacceptable to ignore the risks addressed by "volatile" declarations.
I can not recommend this book. It claims to address object oriented design, Java, and design patterns. I feel that it does an inadequate job on all counts.

I like the book and have taught Spring 2004 Object-oriented Development (CSC 429 ) course at SUNY College at Brockport, New York. I have taught the material from Chapter I through 6. I have also used the material from Ch. 8 Object-Oriented Frameworks for 2 Independent Study Courses with 2 students during Summer 2004.

I find chapters 4 and 5 the best hands on introduction to Design Patterns that makes the corresponding material of The Gang of Four book quite understandable and it is better by far than many other attempts to introduce design patterns. The author plays to an advantage the use of Java and its libraries already based on some of the design patterns that many other authors have not exploited despite existence of Design Patterns presented in Java.

I also find the choice of 5 patterns: Iterator, Strategy, Observer, Composite and Decorator very tasteful as well as very useful. The author's problem examples illustrating the use of design patterns, particularly, the Invoice example is excellent.

The material in Ch. 4 on Interface Types leads to design patterns gracefully, and one can obviously recognize Strategy patter playing important role unnamed yet. This looks to me a good arrangement. Exercises reinforce the ideas very well. If some more exercises will be added that would be a nice improvement.

The author succeeds in making clear the concept of Object-Oriented Frameworks in introductory textbook. Separation of a framework and applications built on it is very well presented. Use of sequence diagrams helps to understand OO Framework. I would suggest that the concept of a Use Case and collaboration diagrams as alternative to sequence diagrams helps to get into the heart of how a framework achieves a goal relevant to a user. An excellent example of such a goal is presented in Ch. 8 for the Graph Framework.

When I was teaching the course I have attempted to replace The Object-Oriented Design Process from Ch. 2 by elements of Craig Larman textbook Applying UML and Patterns (Completely different patterns there than the 5 mentioned above). It helped me to reinforce software engineering concepts taught by Craig Larman that I have taught in software engineering course and also provided good point of view for understanding the OO Frameworks where some of the goals served by an OO Framework are viewed as Use Cases.

I would use the book again for CSC 429 Object-Oriented Development without hesitation should I be teaching this course again. Also, I continue to use OO Design and Patterns as a source of material for Independent Studies.

Finally, I congratulate the author for making available and understandable the concept of Design Patterns as practical way of building OO software at undergraduate level.

An ideal intro to OOD by an insightful author.

The previous reviewer sounds like he is looking for an all in one reference. Indeed, if you are a professional programmer and need a reference book, this one is not for you. However, if you're a student, new to OO programming/design or just want to add to your programming knowledge, this is a perfect book. It's designed for the classroom first (see the preface and exercises!), but is also useful for anyone who learned to program in C++ or Java and wants more sophisticated OO coverage. It is certainly not intended to teach the entire language. Rather, it assumes you already know how to program and want to learn more about Object-Oriented Design, including UML and design patterns. This is an important topic and it's never been introduced in a clearer, more intersting way than it is in this book.

What fun to have a Tad story for Christmas! Bobby Dollar really shines as a character in this story. All the characters are well-drawn and Tad Williams has a talent for combining a rollicking story with a dramatic punch.

A great short to tuck in with under the blanket with some hot cider!

An evening of intense, Christmas fun!

I love it when a mainstream author goes rogue and goes indie, even if it's for just a few minutes. Tad Williams has done just that with his new e-book. YAY! My boy Bobby is home for Christmas even if it is only for 49 pages!

I must say--Williams never ceases to entertain me with his descriptions of his characters, both major and minor. His demons are creepy and his angels are not much better. Bobby himself is sort of a rundown, hard-boiled detective type, with unsavory habits, but he has good intentions. (Key word: intentions.)

My favorite line in this little tale is Bobby opening his defense of his recently deceased client by telling the heavenly judge, "Everyone makes mistakes, and some of us accidentally eat a few people." The hilarity just keeps going from there. Bobby gets the trial continued for an extra day so he can do a bit more investigating, and goes up against a Nazi war-criminal.

That's where it gets really sticky. Bobby doesn't do things the easy way. He always has to bleed all over things.

Aw heck. Just read the book. It's a great little indulgence for one evening of intense, Christmas fun.

Bobby D. encore performance for the holidays

After starring in three novels (most recently "Sleeping Late on Judgement Day") our favorite angel Doloriel aka Bobby Dollar returns for an encore performance for the holidays. This novella takes place after the original triad of novels and can be read independently without getting spoiled for the books, but I think it is best enjoyed if one is familiar with the characters and concepts of that particular fictional universe. If you have yet to meet Bobby D. start with "The Dirty Streets of Heaven".

This is not a traditional sappy Christmas story, but rather something else. Bobby Dollar has to investigate (for the sake of a recently deceased soul) a former Nazi mad scientist who is accused of making human experiments with werewolf genes. Bobby enlists the help of his were-friend Fatback aka George Noceda and starts investigating. And then the s*** hits the Christmas fan:-)
Enjoy and I really hope Tad Williams makes this into an annual holiday tradition!

Grade 3-4-- A simply written account of what the Voyager probes taught us about the four giant planets and their respective rings and moons, matched with big, bright, well-chosen, full-color photographs. The writers note when computer enhancement has been used, and carefully relate pictures and text. A late entrant in a crowded field, this is an acceptable introduction to the mission, although the level of detail is a bit below that in Apfel's Voyager to the Planets (Clarion, 1991). Astronaut/scientist Ride teams up with a science teacher for a book about the Voyager spacecrafts' epic journeys. During them, they passed close enough to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune to take detailed pictures and measurements; the result is a wealth of new information (especially about the planets' rings and moons), gorgeous color photos, and some scientific puzzles. Aimed at younger children than Harris & Weissman's The Great Voyager Adventure (1990), this includes many of the same photos. Though the book's attractive and accessible, its text lacks crisp precision: ``..the Voyagers were launched into space by two rockets.'' Each? ``Many large antennas all over the world would be needed...'' Connected together? ``...although Saturn is big, it is very light...If you could find a bucket big enough, Saturn would float...'' Great book by a real astronaut

My 6 year old loved reading this book and learning about the Voyager expedition. Great pictures, and a lot of really specific information about all the planets and moons it encountered. A classic that should be in the library of any child or adult who loves space.
