My daughter and I enjoyed it immensely.

This book gives a great example of how a little girl overcame the odds against her. It is a book about strength and shows the good consequences of doing whats right. My daughter is 5 1/2 and had me read it to her every day until we had to return it to the library.

The banter between Spenser and his significant other, Susan Silverman, and the imperturbable Hawk--typically a highlight of the series--seems flat here, even veering toward cliche. Still, no Spenser novel fails to be entertaining, but Parker just may be doing better work these days with his two other series characters, Sunny Randall and Jesse Stone. It's a Comfortable Long Term Relationship

Spenser is really a series that you have to read from the beginning if you want to understand what is going on. Hundred-Dollar Baby is no exception. April Kyle, the lead character from Ceremony and Taming a Sea Horse, is back again - now running her own whorehouse in Boston. Unfortunately, someone's trying to take a cut of her profits, and she doesn't want any "men" interfering with her female-only business.

This is "comfort zone" for Spenser - many of his cases have involved feminists who insist they want to do things with women only, and end up relying on Spenser for help. There's not even any preamble in this one - April's in his office from moment one of the story, needing Spenser to rescue her from trouble. And while she claims she doesn't really need any man-help, it turns out her entire plan for life was laid out by a man and she had a male bouncer keeping her safe.

Of course, as is traditional, things get messy quickly, Spenser has no idea what's going on, so he randomly follows people to see what happens. He stirs up some hornets nests. Susan and he talk dirty and have a sex life that's rather active for someone who, according to stated birthdates, has just turned 70. But we suspend disbelief and understand that even though he was 37 in 1973, he hasn't quite aged "normally" since then.

The key here is that if you've read the series all along, when just like long-term married couples, you are extremely familiar with the people and situations. You know Teddy Sapp, Patricia Utley, Hawk, and other people who move in and out of the story - you know their ups, downs, quirks, loves. It's like when an older couple has a conversation along the lines of "Remember that time in Paris?" "I loved the whipped cream". They don't need to say any more, they both know the whole story and meaning and why it's relevant to the current situation. The same is true here - you know that Susan's look is palpable, you've heard that 20 times. You know Hawk can easily switch between high English and low po-boy talk.

So you don't read Spenser books for shocking gore or Philip K Dick like twists. You often can outguess what is going to happen. If anything, Hundred-Dollar Baby is more comfy than several previous ones. No front-page topics here, just another whore story where Spenser tries to give them a hand, defeating thugs who try to take him in, and talking with various underworld types. No new Russian mob, no terrorists, no new characters at all, really. No new locations - you stick right around Boston and a little of New York.

Interestingly, depending on your point of view, this can be good or bad. I really liked this book a lot - I thought it had a different ending than most Spenser books tend to, and it didn't do the "bring in 20 characters for a hoe-down" which had been done several times in the past. The few characters brought in were important to the story. I appreciated that he didn't re-hash items (like the Palpable Susan Eyes) that often get mentioned in every single book.

On the other hand, my boyfriend, who's also an avid Spenser fan and has read all the books, seen all the tv-movies etc., felt there was little going on here. It's more of a short story of "What happened to April" with little development, character, or plot. He felt the storyline was so broadcasted that you could sort of read along in your sleep, since you knew pretty much what each character would do and say.

So there you go. If you're looking for a cutting edge, new story with intricate characters and 24-alive plotlines, this probably isn't the book for you. If you're looking to pick up your first Parker book, I wouldn't start here. It'd be like walking into a 40th wedding anniversary without knowing anyone and missing out on all the in-jokes and story backgrounds. But if you've been reading Spenser all along - or are willing to spend a few weeks catching yourself up on the storyline, this really is a nice continuation. It's a closing out of a story we spent a lot of time with, and it adds a little more depth to Spenser's character.

Classic Spenser

A Spenser novel is as wonderfully dependable and mildly disappointing as a Nero Wolfe novel. Both offer characters with codes of conduct that are stronger than but often different from any codes of law, and both give most of their pleasure from the interaction of the two leads, with plots serving mostly to allow for variations on these interactions. The disappointment comes because the ends are always somewhat sudden, never lingering and giving the reader a chance to absorb the end in the company of friends.

I am not a paid reviewer. I bought this book. I have the whole series and can't wait for the next one. The first 4 books are awesome. Read and reread these books number of times. I kept going to Ms. Cothern blog page to find out when this book was coming out. NO DISAPPOINTMENT AT ALL. I will be anxiously waiting for book 6 now. On an off note if you have read shifters and assassins books book by sandrine gasq-dion then you will recognize the reference in this book. If you have not read them then you need too. Both of these authors are on my top favorite lists and will read them over and over. Thank you to both authors for writing books that I gladly and hole heartily do not mind spending my very low income on!!!!

Mad Dogs book 5 - the good and the bad.

Mad Dogs book 5 - the good and the bad.

The Good: well let's see.......how about EVERYTHING!!! Thought book 4 was awesome but book 5.....bloody brilliant. The guilt (and an idiot moment) of B, the worry of M, the possible devastation of H, the wait on Doc, the nervousness of Oh towards the end of the book and of course the glee of El for getting to blow things up. Also, Duke, while not becoming a Mad Dog, joins the unit.

Oh yeah........and the sex.........can't forget about THAT. B finally makes M a VERY happy man.

The Bad: I read too damn fast and now have to wait for the next book. Started re-reading books 1-4 but still over to soon and the waiting commences.

So Far the Best in the Series

I think so far this is my most anticipated book yet from Brenda Cothern and her Mad Dogs. The last book left on a cliffhanger, so I was so excited when this book finally came out. Some questions get answered, but there are a ton more questions that get raised in this series. While I did receive an ARC for an honest review, I'm also planning on buying a physical copy to complete my set, so far, of the series. This shifter series is far different from others that I read and follow, and the different plot twists and surprises that get mixed into the story are phenomenal. Now that this book is done, I'm anxiously awating the next! I definitely recommend this series to any ahifter fan, especially those that enjoy MM shifter stories.

About the Author
Michelle was born in Buffalo Children's Hospital in Buffalo, NY, on March 1, 1960, thus depriving her mother of a surf'n'turf dinner. She has spent the last 50+ years trying to make it up to her. Michelle has worked in various jobs over the years including hay baler, cow milker, cleaning woman for the rich lady down the road, waitress, darkroom technician, gas station attendant, horse exerciser, dog sitter, cat feeder, egg picker, and, yes, systems analyst and bartender. She is owned by two cats, one greyhound, and fifteen chickens. But she is also blessed with three daughters, three grandsons, and a very tolerant husband.

An opening shot from a new author with great potential

THE GENTLE MAN is a first novel by baby boomer-generation author, Michelle Montague Mogil, who has come to the craft of writing fairly recently. The book is vampire genre, but has some delightful twists that make it worth the read.

Main character Anastasia "Annie" Trent has spent her post-middle age years searching for love, looking for a way to fit in, and trying to climb out of the financial mire that plagues a lot of middle class women these days. As the book opens, Annie and her husband face foreclosure, job layoff, health issues, and a myriad of other challenges. Annie is tired and about to give up and let her life overwhelm her. She works full time a day job she hates and is about to lose anyway. She tends bar at a local wateringhole by night. She and her husband profess to love each other, but they don't hear each other or share much besides almost constant bickering. As Annie is closing up the bar one night, out of the darkness comes a slightly intimidating, but rather strangely appealing gentleman seeking Annie's help to escape from someone or something pursuing him. Against her better judgment, she takes him home and finds herself becoming caught up in his issues. As she struggles with her own common sense vs his otherworldly magnetism, Annie finds out some things about herself and learns a lot about whether fitting in is the way to go. Annie also learns some things about Murphy's Law and the nature of true love.
The novel is short, almost a novella, and I wondered why Mogil didn't expand her project a bit to offer a little more satisfaction.

While readers, especially women, and especially women of, as they say, a certain age, will find Annie an interesting and wryly humorous character, we're left wondering a lot about her motivation.
Though the characters that people Annie's life could be more three dimensional, and the story arc could be fleshed out to provide a more succulent experience, the sense of place and the vivid portrayal of a very "today" grandmother is fun and evocative. For a quick read, and a nice spot of entertainment for vampire enthusiasts, this little book works. As a first novel, THE GENTLE MAN gives a glimpse of what Mogil may be able to do for readers as she hones her craft.

A word about the mechanics of the text - THE GENTLE MAN, as a digital book, could benefit by reformatting to create a better looking, better-reading text. The spacing is erratic and a little bit blown out, which detracts, I think from the reading of the story. Then, too, it's terribly important for authors, especially in today's publishing competition, to have a professional edit and polishing done before taking a work to the public. It's so normal to want to rush to press and share our work, but the experience benefits from fine-tooth combing. Mogil's book is no exception.

Sucks you in

I felt like the narrator was an old friend. The story takes unexpected twists that leave the reader as well as the characters breathless. This is one of those great books I couldn't stop thinking about when I put it down. Short, but very funny, with strikingly raw emotion and laugh-out-loud humor.

The Gentle Man is a clever twist on the typical mid-life crisis.

Turning more and more frequently to her good friend alcohol for solace, Annie Trent tries to cope with an evergrowing burden of problems: a looming layoff, an indifferent husband (at least when they aren't arguing), and working a second job. It wouldn't be surprising that an intriguing stranger's arduous advances would meet little resistence from her battle-weary psyche.

But not all is as it seems. Even as Annie tries to remain true to her life's responsibilities and her husband, such as they are, she finds the dark stranger irresistable on a very basic level. Strangely, however, she keeps blacking out, unable to remember their encounters, finding the only evidence of such her bloodshot eyes, a banging hangover and a tiny re-occuring wound just behind her collarbone.

Coming to realize she has a problem, Annie turns to AA, but Alcoholics Anonymous doesn't have a cure for her newest addiction, the thirst for human blood.

What I like most about this story is the main character. It's not often a story features a firecracker of a grandmother with a colorful vocabulary and a taste for Jim Beam as the heroine in a romantic vampire love story.

I found the story amusing and well-written.

About the Author

Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob’s love for teaching mathematics was nourished for nearly 30 years at Miami Dade College, where he received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College and an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. In addition to his Developmental Algebra Series, Bob has written textbooks covering college algebra, algebra and trigonometry, precalculus, and liberal arts mathematics, all published by Pearson Education. When not secluded in his Northern California writer’s cabin, Bob can be found hiking the beaches and trails of Point Reyes National Seashore, and tending to the chores required by his beloved entourage of horses, chickens, and irritable roosters.

One of My Favorites

I have read dozens of finance books and this is one of the best. I would put it up there with Automatic Millionaire, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and Pirates of Financial Freedom. It isn't perfect though which I will talk about later.

Who is this book for? Everyone can benefit from it, but it is great for married couples and those in their late 20s, 30s, and early 40s. Young adults could benefit tremendously from it, but I'm worried it might not be exciting or fun enough to hold their attention. It's not really meant for retirees.

--- The Good ---

* He says financial freedom is 80% behavior and 20% knowledge which is so important, and he emphasizes this by pointing out there are a lot of broke finance professors.

* There are many real-life success stories of real people which shows his method works, and they also provide inspiration.

* He lays out his seven Baby Steps and makes them simple to understand. He points out that living right financially is not complicated. It may be difficult, but it's not complicated.

* I really liked the quote, "If you worked for a company called YOU Inc. and you managed money at YOU Inc. the way you manage your own money now, would you fire you?"

* The book includes helpful budget forms and worksheet in the back of the book.

* He isn't all gloom and doom. He wants you to have fun and even approves of buying a $30,000 watch, but only after you reach step seven and can afford it.

--- The Not-So-Good ---

* He doesn't go into a lot of detail on how to increase your income. Dave Ramsey is rich because he is a business owner who can make money from his radio show, books, seminars, programs, etc. It would have been great to get his advice on that, but he probably didn't want to overwhelm the reader with too many topics.

* I feel his previous bad experience with debt (he was over-leveraged with his real estate investments) has made him overly zealous on not having any debt. College loans can be very appropriate for some people, business loans can be great in the right situation, and his statement that you should put money toward paying down debt rather than getting the company 401(k) match seemed too extreme to me.

* The book wasn't super entertaining. I found a few parts to be a little dry and repetitive. While it certainly wasn't boring, I wish more money management books would be like the new personal finance adventure novel, but I guess that isn't this book's purpose. Still, there were a couple parts that made me chuckle and he did have some interesting stories.

* He stressed putting 100% of your investments in stock-related mutual funds. First, I feel ETFs are probably better than mutual funds because they are cheaper and won't underperform the market. Second, recommending a 100% stock portfolio to everyone regardless of age, financial goals, or risk tolerance seems risky to me. Plus you wouldn't experience the diversification benefit of owning non-correlated asset classes.

* He doesn't talk about the benefits of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals or having an accountability partner, which have been shown to greatly help people achieve all kinds of dreams.

--- Conclusion ---

Overall it is a very good book with a lot of good advice and inspirational case studies. You certainly won't regret reading it.

When I needed help, I turned to this book and it did not disappoint.

Where did you learn about money? Seriously, ask yourself this question. For most of us, it wasn't school, it was our parents. This means, in order for us to succeed with money, not only did our parents have to do well with money themselves, they had to be good teachers. Now, if you had this privilege, good for you. I still recommend this book. But if you are like the rest of us, you are in a real financial mess and you REALLY need this book!

I got this book in July of 2013. By the end of that first day of reading, I had cut up my credit cards. Five months later, my girlfriend were debt free. We paid off $50,000 in car loans, student loans, and credit cards. Also, I am now in a position to give. In fact, that's why I bought this book recently, to give it away. By July of 2014 we will have a three month emergency fund and will have also paid cash for a month long vacation to Mexico.

If you are tired of having to worry about money, get this book!

This book will change your life and open your eyes

This is by far the BEST financial book I have ever read. It was completely eye opening. I didn't relive how much debt my husband and I had until we sat down and wrote it all out and started a budget. Only three months in and we have paid off all credit cards and closed the accounts, we haven't had any fights about money because we know exactly where it's going, and we are on track to pay off our house as well in almost 10 years or less now.

This book has changed our financial life and improved our marriage. We are now both on the same page and excited each time we get to cross off a debt that is gone forever.

It simply states in his book the seven baby steps you need to follow and in the exact order he says. No other books tells you the exact steps to take, they always give you bulls*** common sense but no physical step by step plan.

If you have credit card debt, student loan debt or even just want to take control of your money and strengthen your relationship then buy this book and read it. It's an easy read and only takes a few days to finish, and have a highlighter handy!

It took a few weeks to get my husband to read it but in order to BOTH be successful and be on the same page it is inevitable you both read it. We sit down for about 30 minutes at the end of each month and create our budget and it's fun! No arguing just making compromises on what's important that month.

It forever changed my life and I am forever grateful to Dave Ramsey and the baby steps. On baby step number two and not stopping anytime soon!
