Robert Eaglestone is Professor of Contemporary Literature and Thought at Royal Holloway, University of London. He is Deputy Director (and formerly Director) of the Holocaust Research Centre. His research interests are in contemporary literature and literary theory, contemporary philosophy, and on Holocaust and genocide studies. He is the author of Doing English: A Guide for Literature Students (third revised edition) (Routledge, 2009).

What's Up With Novels

“This also explains a phenomenon that has always mystified me in literary journals, the certainty reviewers seem to have about novels: to be honest, it takes me ages and ages to work out what I really think about as book, and I often change my mind.”

At the risk of falling into the quick judgment trap that the author cautions against, this reader will quickly make a snap judgment to opine that more care and craft should be taken in a review of contemporary literature that this small volume contains. In no way did it excite me about the possibilities of further reading in that genre. This being said, the design of the small pocket-ready book is delightful with blurbs that serve as bookmarks and a small format for on-the-go reads. The author’s chapter about contemporary literary criticism is interesting and informed.||This book is less about the novel in 2013 than the historical basis unpinning such work. The author also has a jaded look at a novel’s potential influence; “It won’t stop global warming, nor will it prevent torturers from maiming or killing their victims.” Indeed, these are long standing problems, but this reader is hopeful that the novel by Dickens can ameliorate child labor and Stowe’s UNCLE TOM’S CABIN can enlighten and humanize a nation. If, the task of the critic, as the author contends is really to say “yes, but”, this reader would say “not for the average reader, yes, but if your friend is an English professor, one would have a very nice little gift.

This book is an exceptional resource for anybody who needs to gain the ability to replenish their energy and protect themselves from being drained. It is one of the clearest and most comprehensive texts that I have come across. As an energy healer myself, I am usually on top of my own energy system, however I found myself able to access new and deeper layers of my energy system with Brian's suggestions.

historiography can only try to create an image, as true and original as possible, but is never
able to depict everything that happened as it actually was in its full scope. So there were
and always will be fictional elements and interpretations in the reports and writings about
past events.
This assumption leads us to historiographic metafiction, a style of writing that
emerged during the postmodern era. If there is fiction in scholarly historiography, where is
the difference between that and a novel that deals with history? This term paper will try to
give an answer to that question and examine features and characteristics of historiographic
metafiction, which eventually will be applied to Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five. In
postmodern literature and, of course, especially in historiographic metafiction, authors
tried to find new ways of telling stories and particularly representing history. I will take a
closer look at the narrative frame and especially the concept of time Vonnegut used in the
novel. But how is history represented in Slaughterhouse-Five? This will be the second part
of the analysis that will attempt to find answers why Vonnegut wrote the novel the way he
did. The third part will deal with intertextual elements in the novel. All citations from the
novel and the pages indicated in brackets are taken from the edition cited below.

Jamie, like many of today's popular cookbook-centric chefs is on a super foods/clean foods kick. While I found his last book disappointing (surprising as I'm a huge fan and have all of his books) this one is packed full of easy to make classics. The premise is that he's updated family favo(u)rites but with a healthier slant. And it works.
This will satisfy my Jamie craving until his long-awaited Christmas cook book is released.
