About the Author

Sofka Zinovieff was born in London in 1961. She studied social anthropology at Cambridge and is the author of three previous books—Eurydice Street: A Place in Athens; Red Princess: A Revolutionary Life; and The House on Paradise Street. She lives with her husband and daughters at Faringdon.

A Legacy Of Light And Darkness

Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson, Lord Berners, was the quintessential English eccentric throughout his life, a reputation that has only increased since his death over sixty years ago. The model for Lord Merlin in Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love, he loved art and music and displayed a considerable talent for both. His home, Faringdon House in Oxfordshire, was renowned for its comfort, fine cuisine, and hospitality that was enjoyed by Gertrude Stein, Igor Stravinsky, the Mitfords, the Lygons, Evelyn Waugh, and a galaxy of other social and literary stars. Lord Berners was known for his sense of humor and elaborate practical jokes, but he also had a sadder side: he was prone to depression and mercurial mood swings that could sometimes bedevil him for long periods.

Lord Berners' emotional life was somewhat mysterious. He never married, but carried on long friendships with younger men, the longest lasting of which was with Robert Heber-Percy, the youngest son of a noble family. Handsome but without direction and extremely reckless, Robert (The Mad Boy of the title) met Lord Berners in 1930. Despite a nearly 30 year age gap, they became close friends and companions. Robert moved into Faringdon House and remained there for the rest of his life acting as Berners' companion, estate manager, and probable lover (since homosexuality was illegal in England, both men were understandably reticent about that aspect of their relationship.) Even when Robert married the beautiful young socialite Jennifer Fry this curious arrangement continued, with Jennifer living and giving birth to a daughter at Faringdon House.

Sofka Zinovieff is the granddaughter of Robert and Jennifer, and this book is partly a biography of Lord Berners and her grandparents, partly a chronicle of the glamorous parade of writers, musicians, artists, and socialites who came to Faringdon House during its heyday, and partly the story of her own life as the literal heiress (Faringdon House is now hers) of these colorful people. It's an amazing story full of incident and dripping with one fascinating anecdote after another. It's also a sad story, because many of these talented, creative people struggled with depression, addictions, and tragedies, moving from one lover to another but rarely if ever finding true soul mates and contentment.

As befits a chronicle of people who lived in beautiful surroundings, this book is physically a work of art, with heavy glossy pages, fine binding and end papers, and even a pink ribbon for a bookmark. There are many illustrations, mostly photographs of Lord Berners, Robert, and their families and friends; along with some modern photos of some of Faringdon's treasures. Lord Berners himself would be pleased with it.

Mad as a Box of Frogs -- and Magnificently So!

A MAGNIFICENT multi-biographical book by someone who knows the subjects intimately. Sofka Zinovieff writes with authority, facts and humor, and illustrates it with family photos that enhance your reading pleasure. Lord Berners and his "longtime companion," Robert Hebert-Percy, were the original Odd Couple, and "mad as a box of frogs." It is also a beautifully put together volume -- the fabric bookmark adds quite a bit of Old World class. I'm only halfway through the book and had to share my joy and pleasure in reading it with you! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Fast reference for product designers & design students

Nigel Cross framed the world's dialogue about "design thinking" with his 2006 book Designerly Ways of Knowing. His updated edition of Engineering Design Methods is a wonderful quick reference of common product design methods, described by design phase. This is no easy task because designers are notorious about using themselves to prototype new processes and models, so any book will be challenged to document a general shared set of methods for the product design community.

For those interested in learning more, another resource is Hugh Dubberly's How Do You Design?, which is still a work of progress years later.

A useful book in order to give help in structuring and evaluating ideas,

The author, Prof. Nigel Cross (The Open University,Milton Keynes, United Kingdom) offers by this book a strategic approach and a number of tactics as aids for designing successful products. It is intended primarly for use by students and teachers of engineering design and industrial design. Its main emphasis is on the design of products that have an engineering content, although most of the principles and approaches that it teaches are relevant to the design of all kinds of products. It is essentially concerned with the problem formulation and the conceptional and embodiment stages of design, rather than the detail design which is the concern of most engineering texts. This book can most effectively be used in conjunction with projects and exercises that require the exploration and clarificatioin of design problems and the generation and evaluation of design solutions. The author offers several interesting and useful methods that are structured in clear charts and diagrams that are easy to survey. Especially the evaluation methods are very interesting: According to my knowledge Nigel Cross ist the only author of a book of design who describes e.g. the Morphological Chart Method. Cross dos not present his methods in abstraction, but shows also the practical application by examples everybody can understand. Unfortunately, there are not many pictures or photos and colour is also a missing thing in this book. And the rare pictures you can find in this book seem to be a product of the period between 1970 and 1980, although this book was first published in 2000.

Building on the world-wide success of the previous editions, this new edition reinforces its original three-part structure. It is devided in the following chapters or headlines: Part One: Understanding Design (1. The Nature of Design; 2. Design Ability; 3. The Design Process); Part Two: Doing Design (4. New Design Procedures; 5. Clarifying Objectives; 6. Establishing Functions; 7. Setting Requirements; 8. Determining Characteristics; 9. Generating Alternatives; 10. Evaluating Alternatives; 11. Improving Details) and Part Three: Managing Design (12. Design Strategies; 13. Product Development).

Best value for money engineering design book out there

I have made this the main text for a mechanical systems subject that I lecture. The reason for this is that it has a good collection of tools that engineers would want to be familiar with, it has good introductory chapters on the nature of design (they explain the diverse nature of design, and do not push a simple single approach, like some engineering design texts), it explains design within the context of broader development, and it is a reasonable price. I think this is what makes it the best choice for students: it's a good balanced coverage and you know they will buy it.

I am familiar with other works by Nigel Cross, and think very highly of the research and writing that he has done. I have also corresponded with regarding research into design. Even though he is not qualified as an engineer, I have found his understanding of engineering design to be insightful and helpful. The reason I say this? I am clearly biased in writing this review, and I should make that clear.

Although, I think it is the best book out there on the topic when all things are considered, I did need to look elsewhere when I wanted to teach design for X and concurrent engineering. Nigel Cross has also written some excellent stuff on design cognition that I take from his other book 'Designerly ways of knowing' and would like to see in this book.

Finally, although I talk about it from the perspective of a lecturer, I do think it is a good reference for a practising engineer. The tools are covered in enough details to decide if they are right for what you want to do. Also, the preliminary chapters on what design is, what makes a good designer and design strategy are good to review on occasion. They will make you think about if you have become stuck in your ways of working as an engineer, and might need to approach things differently.

In summary - it lacks some things I would like, but it is the best compromise when it comes to engineering design texts for students or professionals.

Madison and Halle Wilde are sisters in high school on the day the world ends. A stone arch appears in the middle of downtown Austin, Texas and everything changes. Madison knows that she and Halle are different, both of them waking up with dragon symbols on the back of their necks, a mark that no one else seems to have. Madison feels compelled to go to the arch in Austin, an arch that seems to be a portal to someplace else, a place full of sinister possibilities. But to do that, she will need to open six other magical gates, first. Each gate she opens releases dark and murderous things into the world, monstrous things that tend to eat people and these are the things that will lead Madison down a path she is not sure she wants to follow but may not be able to stop. Madison wants to make sure that whatever happens, she and her beloved sister are safe. Halle is blonde and clueless, more interested in the latest lip gloss than in world events, but Halle loves Madison more than anyone else and they have always been a team. As the mystery of the magical gates draws them in and they struggle to reach the arch, Madison begins to see something about her sister that bothers her. Halle has been gifted with powers of her own. Halle is the only other person with a dragon on her neck and Halle Wilde could be powerful enough to put an end to all of Madison’s plans if she chooses to. Worse, Madison suspects she will have to break Halle’s heart into a thousand pieces to open the final gate and this betrayal might destroy them both and take the whole world with them.

About the Author
Elisa Romero's first published short story "The Last Blade" won the L.Ron Hubbard's Writer's of the Future contest and was published in Volume 11 under Elisa McCullough. Devoured it!

I want to recommend this book to every literate being with eyeballs. At first glance at the description you might think it's a Young Adult novel because the girls are in high school but that is absolutely not the case. This is very much a delightfully adult romp through a very different type of apocalypse. Expect angels, demons, dead (?) cats, passive-aggressive ghosts, man-eating plants and God.

Can't wait for the next book!

About the Author
Dr. Frederic (“Ric”) Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. He is the lead author of nine undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy.� Dr. Martini is currently affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Manoa and has a long-standing bond with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini is now a President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2005-2007. Dr. Martini was a member of the HAPS committee that established the course curriculum guides for A&P.

Dr. Judi L. Nath is a biology professor at Lourdes College, where she teaches anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.� She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. Dr. Nath is devoted to her students and strives to convey the intricacies of science in a captivating way that students find meaningful, interactive, and exciting.�She is a multiple recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award, granted by the college to recognize her effective teaching, scholarship, and community service. fantastic book, but read my review first...

I just purchased this book last week and it is a great text book. Dr Martini is one of the best in the field of Anatomy and Physiology, so this text book you will want to keep for future references.

With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the 8th edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $35 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0321505719). Both the 8th and 9th edition even have the same amount of pages, 1264 pages to be exact... something is fishy... New pictures, replacement of cover?

I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.

*Update*: The previous edition (8th) is now selling for less than $5 bucks. You are better off with that one, plus you will want to keep it for your second A&P class, or at least as a reference to look back at later on. For most A&P students, you will cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II you will probably start with the Endocrine System or chapter 15.

Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so your be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year. If you take AP1 in spring, your still be able to use your Mastering A & P information if you take AP2 in the fall, saving you a lot!

Dense and Difficult, but Worth the Effort

This book is an excellent "next step" from Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot's classic textbook "Transport Phenomena." While BSL is a great textbook, it lacks some of the more advanced techniques that Deen discusses, especially the Finite Fourier Transform. But be forewarned: this is a very difficult book. Even reading it can be frustrating. The problems are extremely challenging. In order to really understand and ultimately be able to replicate Deen's elegant solutions, working through the examples carefully is a necessity. You will be frustrated, but the result is worth the effort.

Great transport textbook I would highly recommend to Chemical Engineers (especially at the graduate level), or anyone else highly interested in transport and fluids. The language is concise, but the explanations are sufficient to get to complex topics with some heavy thinking on your own accord. Definitely a textbook I will keep in my library.

Great photos & breed key!

We use this book constantly at our small animal shelter. Good photographs of breeds, and the breed key with each description helps people focus in on breeds they'd like to do further research on, and to drop from their list, the breeds that would not be suitable for their lifestyle. It's great for showing people what kind of personalities are blended together in that adorable mutt they are considering adopting from the shelter. The adoption helpers almost never put this one down while showing the dogs.

One of the best!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read it cover to cover many times! I always use it as a reference to learn something new about dogs. It also helped me to decide which breed of dog I should get (along with some other wonderful books). What an enlightening read! Although it could have provided more information and actual pictures (instead of drawings for some of the breeds), I still give it 5 stars!

If you ever wanted to know about dogs or the history of dog breeds, this is the definitive book that you should own. There is almost every breed of dog ever known and the descriptions will guide you if you are thinking about getting a dog, and if you just love them, it's for you!!
