Magone examines how these democracies have been transformed by Europeanization thrusts and global turbulence yet are able to maintain political stability. It provides historical context including the different phases of transformation: the golden period (1945-1979); disorganised capitalism (1979-1993); and re-equilibration (1993-). It includes chapters on political culture, government, parliament, the rise of populism and political parties, subnational government, and the political economy and concludes deliberating on the relevance of consensus democracies’ experiences for the future of European and global governance.

Based on original research, this book will be of strong interest to students and scholars of comparative politics, European government, West European politics, the politics of small states in Europe, and those with a particular interest in the politics of Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

About the Author
Hal R. Varian is Dean of the School of Information Management and Systems at the University of California, Berkeley. He also holds joint appointments in Berkeley's economics department and Haas School of Business. Professor Varian earned his S.B. from MIT, and his Ph.D. from Berkeley. He has taught at the University of Michigan, MIT, Stanford University, University of Siena (Italy), University of Stockholm, and Nuffield College at Oxford University. His graduate textbook, Microeconomic Analysis, is one of the most widely read graduate textbooks in economics. He is the co-author of a best-selling book on business strategy, Information Rules.

It's the economics, stupid

Sorry about the epithet, but in the election season, I couldn't resist! The book's detractors (relatively speaking) obviously aren't "stupid", but they do miss the point---which Varian tries to explain in the preface. So let's try a different tack. Today writing a computer program to do the math used in graduate economics is an undergraduate CS project. Let's let computers do the heavy lifting, and save people for the creative work.
That's what Varian is about. What the world needs is not more people who can manipulate derivatives of implicit functions, but more people who can connect data and stylized facts to appropriate (already known) theories. That's what this book tries to teach, and it is best of breed. Although it's not clear to me that "thinking like an economist" can be taught with great effectiveness (it's a "knack", not an algorithm), Varian over and over again demonstrates that he can clearly express the "inner working" of that mode of thought. As in Information Rules, he demonstrates that he can bring these ideas to those who are not going to be professional economists, but need to understand the analysis.
Of course, some in the audience for this book will make careers in which they seek, and find, data and facts that defy existing theory. For them, of course there are better ways to prepare for the technical prerequisites for graduate school. But years later, none of those books will be nearly as much help in avoiding a dissertation proposal that crumbles into dust, too dry to support itself.

Excellent microeconomics book, but falls short on math.

This book is an excellent bridge from principles of microeconomics. However, while I am very good at applied economics, it falls short on explaining the mathematical concepts it introduces in the appendices. The most calculus I've had experience with is Brief calculus, but if you are to understand the equations in the appendices you'll need a little more calculus (unless you're born a math genius). The theories introduced in the book are clear and precise and make for easy reading and studying. If you want more concise understanding of the concepts, then I highly recommend purchasing the companion workbook.

Very conceptual!

I am a Public Policy student at the University of Chicago and used this book for an introductory Microeconomics course. Varian explains the concepts of Microeconomics well. Many of the previous reviews state that the book does not have many mathematical examples or questions. This is because there is a supplementary workbook that addresses only the math. (My professor assigned weekly problem sets based on the workbook problems.) By the end of the course, I felt that I understood the concepts and had a good foundation for future coursework. I believe this is very important for anyone who plans to take more Economics courses.

This book is considered the standard in the field of Economics. I recommend this book if you want to understand the concepts instead of just number crunching.

A wonderful book about non-local mind

Dr. Dossey explores the research and theory behind the concept of non-local mind, with the intent to illustrate how our minds are non-local -- unconfined to brains and bodies and thus not entirely dependent on the physical organism. As Dossey explains, "If non-local mind is a reality, the world becomes a place of interaction and connection, not one of isolation and disjunction. And if humanity really believed that non-local mind were real, an entirely new foundation for ethical and moral behavior would enter, which would hold at least the possibility of a radical departure from the insane ways human beings and nation-states have chronically behaved toward each other." Dossey delves into ideas put forward by Schrodinger, Godel, Einstein, Margenau, and Bohm -- before moving into the spiritual implications of non-local mind. I highly recommend this book as an excellent starting point for understanding the concept of "one mind", and for considering the implications this has in our lives.

About the Author

Born in Wiltshire, England, in 1928, Desmond Morris got his undergraduate degree in zoology from Birmingham University and his doctorate from Oxford. He became curator of mammals at the London Zoo in 1959, a post he held for eight years. He was already the author of some fifty scientific papers and seven books before completing his now famous The Naked Ape in 1967, which has sold more than ten million copies throughout the world and was translated into almost every known language. The Human Zoo and Intimate Behavior, the books that followed it in The Naked Ape Trilogy, likewise have sold millions of copies in dozens of languages across the globe. Morris has also become well known for his many television programs and films on human and animal behaviour. His accessible, hands-on approach has made him popular with both adults and children. Morris is the author of over thirty books. His most recent works include The Human Animal and Bodytalk: a World Guide to Gestures. He lives in Oxford, England. I only got this because I needed to research some 1970's perspectives on social behavior and gender roles. It's a crock, not that there aren't some good observations, but the arrogant assertions based on them are off putting and rather laughable, except for the fact that people believed them and acted on them back then.

MARIE DUNFORD, Ph.D., R.D., has been involved in sports nutrition since the mid-1980s. In 1985, while a faculty member at California State University, Fresno, she created the curriculum for an upper-division course entitled "Nutrition and the Athlete." She taught the course for a total of 16 years, during which time she interacted with thousands of student athletes. This direct exposure to nutrition and exercise science majors and NCAA Division I athletes helped her to develop an understanding of how students learn and the sports nutrition topics that are the most difficult for students to master. In addition to this textbook, Dr. Dunford has written three other books and numerous online sports nutrition courses for nutrition and exercise professionals. She is an active member of SCAN--the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists--a dietetic practice group of the American Dietetic Association, and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. She is an avid recreational tennis player and a struggling student of French.

J. ANDREW DOYLE, Ph.D., FACSM, is an Associate Professor of Exercise Physiology and the Director of the Applied Physiology Laboratory in the Department of Kinesiology and Health at Georgia State University, where he formerly served as the Department Chair. He received a B.S. in Zoology from Clemson University, an M.S. in Exercise Science from Georgia State University, and his doctorate in Exercise Physiology from the Ohio State University. He has taught exercise physiology, exercise testing and fitness assessment, and exercise programming at the undergraduate and graduate level for over 20 years. His research interests include carbohydrate metabolism and exercise and the role of physical activity, exercise, and fitness in health. He has conducted, published, and presented numerous research studies with cyclists, runners, and triathletes, and has extensive experience testing elite athletes from cycling, running, gymnastics, rowing, canoe and kayak, and basketball. Dr. Doyle is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Great Sports Nutrition Book

I bought the Kindle version of this book for a Sports Nutrition class I was taking in my Dietetics program. Compared to buying this at the University book store I found that I could own it from Amazon cheaper than if I wanted to rent it from the book store. Some of the material can be dry but it is well written. If you are the type of learner that gets a lot from reading the book then I think that this is a great book for that. For learners that get more from lecture I found the search function to be helpful when needing quick answers and references. It was a good buy for the price.
